“They’re perfect in every way, Remi,” London said quickly. “I can’t imagine going back to before they arrived. I didn’t think more could be better, yet it is.”
Remi and Neven both looked at her with a peculiar intensity which kicked in her wariness. “What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?” she demanded.
“You really feel more is better, my sweetest love?” Remi asked softly and kissed her hand.
London slid her gaze to Neven. He was staring at her with the same intense regard. “You’re scaring me,” she said.
Neven and Remi exchanged glances.
Neven sat up and took her hand in both of his. “Remember when you asked why we were making the kids’ bedrooms smaller than we had agreed upon, a couple of weeks ago?”
“You two got all vague on me,” London said, recalling the puzzling conversation which seemed to go nowhere.
Neven nodded. “We had to make the bedrooms all a little bit smaller to fit another one in.”
London looked from him to Remi and back, puzzled. Then it dropped. She opened her mouth. Closed it. She found her voice. “I’m pregnant?”
Remi and Neven both laughed. It was a joyous sound.
“I can’t be…the timing is all wrong…how could you possibly know before me?” she demanded.
“Your pheromones have changed,” Neven said. “Remi picked it up first. He’s had more practice. It’s unmistakable now. You’re just over four weeks pregnant.”
London sat, stunned. “Denis…” she said weakly. She looked at Remi. “Do you mind?”
“Mind?” Remi said, trying to sound offended. “Why on earth would I mind? It was me you seduced. Even if I don’t personally remember it, it’s still my child you’re carrying.” His smile grew heated. “You’ll have to reproduce the occasion so I can remember the moment.”
London glanced at Neven.
He shook his head. “I mind as much as Remi minds about Jason. It makes no difference at all. There’s a type of symmetry about it, really.” He leaned and kissed her briefly. “His, mine, Denis’…they’re all ours. That’s all that matters.”
“It is everything which gives life meaning,” Remi said, his voice low the way got when he was speaking of things which moved him deeply. “I died to make this happen…well, you know what I mean. Given the same circumstances, I would make the same choices Denis did. I love you. Both of you. I brought my children through time, so you can be part of their lives. I’ve made a lot of crappy decisions in the past. This was not one of them.”
“No, it wasn’t,” Neven said.
“Not in the slightest,” London said in agreement. “Now, one of you had better kiss me properly, or this pregnant lady will go all hormonal on you and weep like a baby.”
“We can’t have that,” Remi said, getting to his knees, while Neven pushed up his sleeves.
London let them fuss over her and take their turns kissing her until she melted. She reveled in the moment of perfect love, which had been given to her because of the courage of these same men, two hundred years ago.
For Denis’ sake, she would never let it go.
