‘Oh, Mum. Of course that’s not true.’ I put my arms around her all the same and give her a hug.

But then something odd strikes me.

‘Mu-um? How did you find me? How did you know I was here?’

I follow Mum’s eyes. She’s looking at the bulge in my pocket where I keep my mobile.

My mobile. The mobile she gave me.

‘Mu-um! You put a chip in it. You’ve been tracking me, haven’t you!’

      ‘Hollywood, I –’

      ‘Tell the truth, Mum …’

‘Well, only because … because Holly …’ Mum blows her nose and wipes her eyes and looks me straight in the face. ‘Because I need you, Holly. I need you with me. You are the one thing that makes my life feel real.’

I stare back at her and am kind of engulfed in a great big wave of feeling …

(Hang on, this is where the music would fade in if this was the movies)

… because in spite of everything, she’s my mum and I’ve got to forgive her. Because whatever your mum’s done, your mum’s your mum, and you only get one, so you’ve really got to love her whatever …

That is until she does the next totally random thing …
