A frown of concern fought with desire and excitement on his handsome face. “Don’t you need help, too, Suzie?”

When she didn’t reply, he began to assist her as one piece of clothing at a time was removed and hung on pegs on the wall. By the time she was in her chemise, she was trembling so violently, she was afraid she might fall down.

Johan lifted her, his powerful arms wonderful and warm beneath as he carried her to the bed. He gently pulled the coverlet up over her.

“Can you get the last two buttons for me?” He kissed her forehead and then each of her fingertips.

The only thing she was afraid of now was that she might stop breathing altogether before he joined her in bed.

Johan bent down and nuzzled her neck as he had at the church. “I love you so much.”

“I love you, too.” She unfastened the last two buttons, and he removed his vest.

Johan smiled down at her as he finished undressing. His hands were shaking, too. “We need to get started on those twelve children I want.”

How could I have thought him angelic? She reached over for his pillow and threw it at him. “Eleven! You forgot about Sarah.”

The pillow hit her softly in the face on its return.

Johan pushed it aside and settled himself beside her on the bed. His bare shoulders obscured the candlelight behind him on the nightstand. “My frau, eleven would be fine.”

How serious he sounded! “Husband, I thought you’d learned…”

He kissed her full on the mouth, lingering there. “Ja. God’s will, not mine,” Johan murmured as he turned toward the light. He leaned over and blew out the candle. “But we can try, can’t we?”

      Author Note

Johannes Adam and Susanna (Sehler) Rousch had twelve children. Nine of their ten sons fought in the American Revolution. While this novel is inspired by their lives, it is a piece of fiction. The Palatinate, indeed, was invaded by the French during this time frame and many people immigrated to America, as did my ancestors. Temporary amnesia, such as Suzanne’s, can be caused by extreme illness or injury. Some people never fully recall portions of their life before the event.
