Even as she said it, the epic truth of it stunned her. The way she’d been gunning for some extreme shift in him, something that would change him—it was all wrong. “I didn’t understand, that’s all.”
“Understand?” His chest heaved as he caught his breath.
Or maybe it was emotion.
“I didn’t understand,” she whispered, tracing the fierce head of one of his dragons, “that you have to breathe fire in order to live.”
She looked up at him then, and there were tears in his eyes.
“This is enough,” she said. “I can let it be just this—I really, really can.” It was like a revelation. “I can let it be just this.”
And something in him shifted too—something deep and profound. She sensed it, and with that, their future cracked open wide.
They would be okay—she knew it, knew it with a bone-deep certainty that she’d never experienced before. They were together now. They’d face everything together.
And the future had cracked open so wide that it contained every possibility.

ABOUT CAROLYN CRANE
I’m a writer living in Minneapolis with my husband and two cats.
I work a day job as a freelance advertising writer, and have for years. I’ve also waited tables at a shocking number of Minneapolis restaurants and bars (though not as many, incidentally, as my writer husband has). I’ve also been a shop clerk and a plastics factory worker, which I was dismal at (think I Love Lucy).
Also, I can relate almost any life experience to one or another Star Trek episodes, and if you invite me to your party, your cheese plate will be in grave danger.
During rare moments when I’m not at my computer, I can be found reading in bed, running, helping animals, or eating Mexican food.
I love hearing from readers. Visit me at www.authorcarolyncrane.com
