The second I saw this cover, the title came to me instantly as well. Sometimes that just happens. Everything falls into place all by itself, and I’m left sitting in my chair, wondering where the hell my brain even came up with any of it. And hopefully, by now, you will know it isn’t Amnesia on the cover of this book, but Sadie.
I like the twist that Am isn’t Sadie after all and there are TWO kidnapped girls, both entirely similar in a lot of ways. I like the mystery surrounding them both and the island. The way everyone had to come to terms with the identity of both girls and how everything changed and shifted around them. It was both a challenge and a pleasure to write about a woman who didn’t really have an identity, who kind of operated on the fact that she had no idea who she was or where she belonged.
At the same time, this story is a little heartbreaking, eh? And pretty dark. Darker than most of the books I’ve written before. Maybe that’s the thing that makes it beautiful and hopefully a little haunting, just like the covers.
A few fun, random facts about a few people, etc., in this book:
1. It’s set in Maine because I think Maine is beautiful, and my husband grew up there.
2. Edward is inspired by my father, who had dimples, black curly hair, blue eyes, and a square jaw. He was ornery, and everyone liked him. Everyone called him Eddie. Also, my father passed of cancer when I was eleven.
3. Joline is named after and inspired by my husband’s aunt. She lives in Maine and used to work in a bakery.
4. I desperately wanted to make the monkey bread muffin recipe in the back of this book, but I haven’t because I’m gluten free and these muffins are decidedly not. PS: If you try them, tell me how they are!
5. I thoroughly believe in the Loch Ness monster.
