I stood and picked her up. I twirled her around a few times before setting her tiny ass down. Our interaction had garnered us an audience and claps and “congratulations” echoed around the restaurant.
I bit back a smile and rubbed my thumb along her cheek. “I can’t wait for you to be my wife, shortstop.”
“Are you sure?” she asked, grinning up at me.
“Yeah, why not?”
“What if I’m one of those nagging wives who makes you cook and clean and spends all your money?”
I sat in my chair and pulled her into my lap, brushing a stray hair away from her face. “I don’t care if you do those things. Besides, I’ll just hire a housekeeper.”
“No, you won’t.” She laughed. “You’ll just make one of those prospect guys do the dirty work.”
I chuckled. “You’re not wrong.” Then, my face went serious. “You realize I can’t give you children. Are you all right with that?”
She nodded immediately. “Yes, I am. In fact, I’d be okay with it if you make me like you.”
I shook my head. “No, shortstop. I will not kill you.”
“It’s not killing me if I get to live an extra-long life with you,” she whispered against my lips.
That was something we’d discuss much, much later.
For now, I was on cloud nine. For more than one reason, today was the best day of my life. And it could only get better from here.
As we left the restaurant and waited for the valet, my phone chimed in my pocket. I pulled it out and clicked on the video Shadow sent. I muted it since there were a few people around, but I didn’t need sound to read the pleading and begging on Dick’s lips right before he was stabbed in the chest and then beheaded. The body turned to ash immediately and then the camera’s view flipped around to selfie mode, where I saw Shadow, who had a big smile on his face and his tongue out. He threw up the devil’s sign with his fingers and said, “Fuck yeah!”
I chuckled and pocketed the phone. A huge feeling of relief washed over me. I hadn’t realized how much that dick was still haunting me. We certainly didn’t need anyone or anything like him trying to take over or “rule” the supernatural in New Orleans. The Nighthawks had it covered. This city was mine, and this gorgeous woman tucked into my side was mine, and I would walk through hell and hurricanes to destroy anyone who tried to take either from me.
