    The Dead Come Calling

Jonelle had kicked Stony and Blaine out of her house the day after I brought Teri home. I loved them to pieces, but I was sick and tired of seeing them after spending two weeks trapped in my house with them. Sensing their welcome was worn out at my place, they headed back home to Waco.

Mal was still here. He hadn’t mentioned leaving for Waco and I hadn’t brought it up either. We were taking things one day at a time, just as we agreed. While he did sleep with me every night, that was all we did. I felt as if I was waiting for something, but I wasn’t sure what it might be.

Having Teri tethered to me was a huge adjustment for both of us. Now, instead of waiting at home for me to return from whatever errands I might have, she went with me. We’d experimented and it seemed that she couldn’t get more than thirty or forty yards from me before the chain that connected us stopped her short.

She was also excited about going with me to meet with the members of Angie’s coven. Jonelle and I talked about it a few days after Stony and Blaine left and we decided that it would be a good idea to learn as much as we could about our abilities.

Mal seemed interested in the fact that Jonelle was a witch, going so far as to ask me if I thought she would be interested in joining the show once we started filming episodes for the network. Though I told him he would have to ask her, I was almost certain she would say yes. Jonelle’s temperament was the polar opposite of mine. While I disliked attention and struggled in front of the camera, especially at first, she would thrive on it.

“Earth to Zoe,” Teri called, snapping her fingers and breaking me out of my reverie. “What are you thinking about?”

I took a sip of the coffee I’d made before I answered. “How crowded road trips with the guys are going to be if you and Jonelle end up joining us on the show.”

Teri’s face lit with a huge smile. “It’s going to be a blast, isn’t it? Maybe I’ll finally be able to hook up with someone. I’m dying to know if I can have sex with another ghost. Thirty years is too damn long to go without an orgasm.”

I nearly spit out my coffee. “TMI, Teri. I don’t need to know that about you.”

She sneered at me. “If you go without sex much longer, you may forget how to have an orgasm,” she pointed out.

“My sex life is none of your business.” Though Mal and I still hadn’t crossed that line, we hadn’t exactly been keeping our hands off each other.

In fact, we were supposed to go on our first date later tonight.

I smiled to myself as I sipped my coffee again.

Mal and I still had so much to learn about each other, just as I had a lot to learn about myself, but I was ready to try.

Because falling in love meant leaping without looking, taking a risk.

And I knew without a doubt that Mal would be there to catch me.
