“You did, when I asked you to marry me. And, as fate would have it, you were already expecting.”
She shot him a knowing look. “I still say we have my accident to thank.”
“I know your theory—all that rest somehow made the babe ‘stick,’ but I am not letting you hit your head next time we want to have a child.”
She chuckled softly. “I don’t need to hit my head. I just need to stay in bed a lot. I can’t imagine you’d mind that.” She gave him a seductive look.
“God no, but it’s far too soon to think about that.”
She exhaled in resignation. “Yes, but know that I’m looking forward to it.” She narrowed her eyes pointedly.
He kissed her again, this time on the mouth, his lips lingering over hers. “Thank you for giving me a joy I never imagined to feel. I know it hasn’t been easy—I’m not easy.”
“No, but I love you anyway. Our joy is all the sweeter because it wasn’t easy.”
“Such a wise woman. Thank you for persevering, for believing in what we shared and that we could find it again.”
“I’m not sure we found it,” she said. “I think we created something new.” She glanced toward their sleeping son before curling her hand around Nick’s neck. “What we have now is wondrous in all its glorious imperfection.”
