What the rest of civilization called the commune, the residents called the farm. According to the people in the nearby town of Wyndback and the world beyond, they were separatists—a strange colony of religious fanatics resolved to live outside of the progress and conveniences of modern culture. But they considered themselves an extended family, and they held that their lifestyle was a symbol of unity and faith. The truth, as it always does, fell somewhere in between….
