Coming Soon
Marcus Cheltenham, the current Viscount Breckenright and eventual Earl of Evanston, has returned to London at the height of the social season - just in time to save his sister's reputation. Now, however, the family crisis has passed and, as the heir to the Evanston fortunes, he must decide whether to remain in London or leave town to rusticate in the country. Not that it is a particularly easy choice. Though it should be.
Single and undeniably handsome, Marcus has long been a favorite target of match-making mamas who wish to see their daughter wed to a man who would, in time, make them a wealthy and respected countess. That was before, however. Before the fever that stole his sight, and the doctors who bled his body, leaving him partially blind and physically weak. However, Marcus's self-imposed exile to Bath to speed his recovery has done little to cool interest in the man the scandal sheets now refer to as "The Viscount of Mystery." And the worst gossip of all is the mysterious "Lady X" and her Society Tales column. She has pronounced Marcus the "catch of the season," despite his physical flaws, much to his dismay.
Lady Caroline Turner was Marcus Cheltenham's best friend for years, growing up together on neighboring country estates. In fact, she was the audacious woman who dared to hold a knife on a so-called physician who would have bled the young viscount to death, given the opportunity. Then, Marcus was gone, whisked away to recover his health, and Caroline lost the one person who helped her make sense of a world where she was expected to be both the lady of the manor and a meek, obedient daughter at the same time.
Now, Marcus is back, but he's not the same man who left London three years ago. He's more cautious now, harder in many ways, and not nearly the catch he once was, at least in the eyes of the ton. He's also hurting and alone, and as his friend, Caroline cannot bear to see him suffer. Determined to turn his marital prospects, not to mention his life, around, Caroline, under her guise as Lady X, sets out to make Marcus the most sought after bachelor of the season once again. With her pen and crafty way with words, she can make the so-called "Viscount of Mystery" into a man every woman desires for her own.
However Caroline underestimates how painful it will be to watch women pursue Marcus, especially when she quickly discovers that she wants him for herself! However, they are old friends, and the viscount has made it clear that he does not think of her in a romantic light. Still, would Marcus truly be happy married to a feather-brained girl just out of the schoolroom? Or worse, a widow who is only looking to warm her bed and doesn't appreciate what a man like Marcus truly needs in a woman? Doesn't he deserve to have someone in his life who challenges him and pushes him to leave the past behind and forge a new future? Doesn't he deserve someone...like Caroline?
