That night the two of them camped in an orchard miles to the west, on their way toward the towering mountains of China’s western border. Bren pulled out his journal, but he couldn’t make himself write. All he could think about were his last moments with Mouse, and what she had whispered to him, just before she left.
She had said, “Those who seek immortality find only death. There are greater rewards elsewhere, if you keep looking.”
Bren put his journal away and slept.
