He held up the orange. “Do you think I need more vitamin C?” he asked.
“That’s a long time O’Riley family tradition. Back in the day when my great grandmother was a girl, oranges were priceless. So my family saved up so each child could have one in his or her Christmas stocking. Now we can get oranges by the box full if we want. But the family tradition holds.
He nodded. “I’ll remember that each year. Nice tradition.”
She unloaded hers, also with practical gifts, including a new hair brush and comb. “My folks sent this. My mom still thinks I need to be surprised for Christmas.”
She reached beneath the tree and pulled out a square wrapped box and handed it to him.
“Merry Christmas, Jake.”
“Thank you.” He opened it. A pair of warm leather motorcycle gloves.
“These are great! I can really use them.”
“Once the roads are safe for a motorcycle,” she warned.
He rose and handed her the gift he’d brought.
She opened the long box and lifted out the gold locket on a gold chain.
“It’s lovely,” she said studying it in delight.
“It opens for pictures,” he said.
She pried it open. Two pictures could fit inside.
“So I’ll do one of you and me, to celebrate our first Christmas together,” she said, leaning over to kiss him.
“I like the sound of that–our first Christmas.”
“The first of a gazillion, I hope,” Shea said happily. “But none will be as special as this one. I love you, Jake Morgan.”
“I love you, Shea O’Riley, and always will.”
That vow was sealed with a kiss.
