“You’re kidding. Where's Roger?” Ned demanded.
“Probably picking up his priceless dueling pistols and cleaning the mud off them,” Travis said. He looked at Evaline. “Your father and Horace made sure neither gun had a bullet in it.”
Evaline put her head on his chest. “Thank God.”
Travis turned to Evaline again. “How did Ned find out about this?”
“I was afraid, so when Ned stopped by, I asked him to help me get to you to stop this duel.” Evaline explained. “When I told him my mother wanted Roger to take Ellen instead, he said he’d take your place and duel with Roger.”
“Well, it's over. I hope Roger goes back to England,” Travis said pulling his wife close. He kissed her forehead. “Let’s go home.”
“We'll have to ride double, since you rode Comanche here and I rode with Ned in the buggy,” she said.
“No! No double riding! I’ll drive Ned’s buggy, and he can take Comanche home.”
“I have one other piece of good news,” Ned said.
They all turned to look at Ned.
“I ran into Dr. Henderson—yes, he’s here, again. He’s proposed to Libby and he also said he’s ninety percent sure she’ll walk again without the aid of sticks.”
“Thank you, Ned. That’s the best news I’ve heard in ages,” Travis said as he walked to the buggy. Ned stayed by the house. Travis called, “Aren’t you coming?”
“I think I’ll stay for a few minutes. I need to talk to Ellen about something,” Ned said
Travis and Evaline got into the buggy. Travis turned to her and said, “I think I might get a brother after all.”
