    The Wild Cry of Love

“It is going to be hard to wait, my precious, but it will really not be for very long.”

“Even now I cannot believe that it is all going to be so easy,” Valda said. “It was so lucky that Mama knew your aunt and that they were girls together when they were young.”

“What did they say before I arrived?” Roydon asked.

“My stepfather, despite the fact that you thought my name was Burton, was quite convinced you were a fortune-hunter.”

“That is exactly what I am!” Roydon cried. “For I cannot believe that any man could gain a more glorious, golden, valuable fortune than to be married to you. Even if you had not an exceptional talent for taking snapshots!”

He was teasing her and Valda laughed.

“You have not seen them yet! It will be so mortifying if they don’t turn out.”

“In which case we shall have every excuse for spending part of our honeymoon in the Camargue so that you can try again.”

      “Do you mean that?”

      Valda’s question was breathless.

“I cannot imagine anywhere else I would rather be alone with you,” he answered.

“Or I with – you,” she whispered.

“We were both looking for wild horses,” he said, “and I found someone very beautiful and very wild. Someone who I want to look after and keep beside me both day and night in case she should escape me.”

There was the deep note in his voice that Valda knew so well and although it was hard to see his eyes in the darkness she knew there would be a touch of fire in them.

“I cannot help feeling – wild when I am with – you,” she whispered. “You – excite me and your kisses – sweep me away from the world – and up to the stars.”

His lips were very close to hers as she spoke and now he pulled her almost roughly against him and his mouth was on hers.

Then there was that rapture that ecstasy and that wonder which made her cling to him with a passion that equalled his own.

‘I shall always be wild where he is concerned,’ she thought.

She surrendered herself to the demand of his lips, feeling his arms holding her closer and still closer until it was hard to breathe.

He lifted his head and proclaimed in a voice that was triumphant,

“You are mine and there are no more obstacles, no more difficulties! We have won, my darling! We have overcome them all, and now we can be together forever!”

“For – ever!” Valda repeated against his lips.

She thought as she did so that her cry for love, which had sent her to the Camargue, had not been in vain.

She had found the answer. It was Roydon!
