The exotic-looking dark-haired guy and his fiancée looked at each other. He mouthed, We got this.
They all laughed and Charlotte said, “Two and a half weeks is slow by these guys’ standards. Hint, hint,” she added with a sideways look up at Jace.
“Ahem,” said Emma, giving Matt a meaningful look. “Two weeks is a long time. She said weeks not years.”
Matt scowled at all the men present, then put on a pleasant face and said to Emma, “Just think how much sweeter it will be if I ever do get around to asking you.”
“That’s right, dear,” said Beryl. “You go at your pace. Not everyone needs to get married like the world is ending. Now let’s get inside before everyone out here turns into a popsicle.”
“The new fiancés first,” said Emma. “We don’t want them sneaking off.”
“Smart move,” muttered Jillian, as Jak took her hand and led her into the restaurant.
As soon as they were clear of the second set of doors, everyone in the restaurant erupted in applause, shouting congratulations and catcalling. Jillian didn’t recognize anyone there. Complete strangers were celebrating with them.
Jillian looked at Jak, who tried to put on an innocent face.
She said, “How much prep work did you put into this?”
“Oh, you know,” said Jak vaguely, totally dodging the question.
Some of the people in the restaurant started tapping their knives on their glasses, demanding a kiss as if they were already at their reception. Jillian was only so happy to comply.
After a kiss that was much too short, Jak took her hand and led her to a back room of the restaurant. It had grass turf for a floor, a pool table, foosball, and a few tables set up. Along the biggest wall hung a couple of poster boards with a poem:
Jak and Jill
went up the hill—
No, they met at a show.
Three times they met
a fruitcake et,
and now he’s Jillian’s beau.
Jak groaned. “Fireman poetry. Sorry, I didn’t know it was going to happen or I would have warned you.”
“I love it,” said Jillian. “Our fairy tale. You did promise me a million happy memories.”
“And this counts as a happy one?” He took her in his arms and looked down at her.
“It’s funny,” she answered. “Cringy, but funny.”
“Good, because I plan on keeping that promise,” said Jak gazing intently into her eyes. “By my count I’m up to at least twenty.”
Jillian chuckled because by her count he was at least ten times that. She didn’t argue though, just planted a kiss on him and said, “Twenty-one.”
“I love my life so much,” said Jak.
“Me too,” said Jillian. “It’s like one big Christmas miracle …”
“Spread out into a million happy memories.”
