She pulled away from the kiss and reached for the car door. As she opened it she hesitated. ‘Will I ever see you again?’

He turned the key in the ignition on the car and stared up at the road ahead. ‘You’ll see me on the news one day.’

‘Then will you promise me something?’

      ‘It depends.’

‘I want you to keep my Dirty Dancing CD and whenever you hear this song, will you think about me?’

He stopped staring at the road and looked across at her. She couldn’t tell for sure, but she had a feeling he was smiling beneath the mask. ‘Sure.’

Baby picked her pink handbag up from the floor by her feet and climbed out of the car. She closed the door behind her and leant back in through the open window. ‘I’ll never forget you,’ she promised.

He nodded. She smiled at him one last time, then turned around and took the first nerve wracking steps towards the front gate of her father’s house.

      *********************************************************

Joey Conrad watched Baby walk tentatively up the path to the front door of the house. She pressed the doorbell and stood nervously waiting for someone to answer. Five or maybe six seconds passed before the door opened inwards. A man in his early fifties in a grey suit stood at the door. Conrad recognised him. It was Devon Pincent. Pincent took one look at the young woman on his doorstep in the blue jeans and red sleeveless top and his face instantly lit up into a beaming smile.

He stepped outside and grabbed his daughter. He threw his arms around her and squeezed her tight, as if he never wanted to let her go. Baby responded in kind, throwing her arms around her father for the first time since she was a five-year-old child. From his seat in the car, Joey Conrad could hear Devon Pincent weeping like a child as he hugged his daughter. He was pleased for Pincent, his old mentor, but deep down, for selfish reasons he felt just a little bit sad. He’d only known Baby for a short time, but already she was the best friend he’d ever had. He’d miss her. Devon Pincent was a lucky guy.

He’d been watching Pincent and Baby hug each other for little more than ten seconds when he heard the sound of police sirens behind him. As they grew louder, the sirens drowned out the Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes song. In his rear view mirror The Red Mohawk saw two police cars screeching around the corner, heading towards him. He twisted a knob on the CD player and turned the volume up to the max.

It was time to hit the road.
