      “You want to get married?”

She sounded like an idiot asking the question, but everything seemed so surreal. Looking away from the new hardware on her hand, she tried to see if there was any hint of mischief in Brady's greenish-brown eyes. She had fallen in love with the man those eyes belonged to, and if there was a hint that the proposal was all some elaborate hoax, she was going to figure out a way to kill him with the eggplant parmesan getting cold on her plate.

The warm smile that greeted her told her she had nothing to worry about. He reached forward and caressed the right side of her face with his hand, which she turned into to feel the heat from it.

“I had it all written out for you so there wouldn't be any misunderstandings, but you still have to ask, don't you?”

He kissed the tip of her nose, then stared into her eyes from an inch away. The question didn't need a response, so she waited for him to finish.

“Yes, Nina, my lovely, lovely Nina. I want you to be my wife. I'll even use the dreaded label. It doesn't seem so bad when you're sure without a doubt that you love someone.”

She smacked him on his shoulder playfully and pushed him away. As much as she loved getting lost in his eyes, he had things he needed to do.

“I love you too, which means I need a pen.”

Nina had thought maybe he'd gotten so wrapped up in bringing the contract and the ring that he'd forgotten the all-important instrument. In the end, her signing the piece of paper wasn't exactly something that bound anything. Sure, the legal talk she read over could have some power, but it wasn't like once she signed it they were married. There had to be witnesses and a judge for that kind of thing.

Brady smiled as he pulled a black pen out of his back pocket. She returned the smile, even though tears were still slowly falling down her face. She'd never understood the whole being so happy you cried thing, but she was getting the hang of it.

Snatching the pen from him, she quickly, but legibly, wrote her name on the line and checked the box next to the yes. Unlike most girls, the knight in shining armor wasn't a dream she'd ever had. In a way, that was exactly what she got. Brady didn't have a horse or a sword, but he had skates and a hockey stick. Most importantly, he had saved her from a life without knowing how good love could feel.

      Acknowledgments

Thank you to those who helped me bring these characters to life. My husband is the first person on that list for bringing the world of hockey into my life to begin with. Assistance from Diane and Bella during the editing process was invaluable. I’m so happy I’ve been able to find people out there like these two who help try to make my work better.

Thank you to my beta readers, who don’t always like everything I write, but still give me the feedback I need to hear. And thank you to all those readers out there who have stuck by me for the last few years. Writing and publishing my stories has been an amazing journey, and I have you to thank for that.
