“This day just sucks.”
Actually, the day hadn’t ended too badly all things considered. More trouble would be calling in the form of Emma eventually, but for now we could rest and recuperate.
Rooster called out to us before we got too far. Every muscle in my body ached for whatever he was about to say.
“I don’t want to keep you when it’s obvious you need a break.” He closed the distance between us and kept his voice low. “I just got a call, and I thought I should make you aware.”
I waited, bracing myself.
“It was Drake. His sister is ... better. I won’t say she’s good because I’m not sure that’s happening anytime soon, but he feels safe enough to leave her for a bit. He’s on his way back —and he wants to set up a time to talk to you.”
My heart gave a little jolt. “Today?”
“No. It will still be a few days. He just wanted you to know he hasn’t forgotten about you.”
Everything was coming together at once and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. “Well ... then I’ll be waiting when he gets here.”
“I’ll tell him.” Rooster flashed a smile. “You guys should get some rest. You’ve earned it.”
“That’s the plan,” Gunner reassured him. “We’re just arguing about who will do the driving on the way home.”
“I’m driving,” I said automatically. “It’s my bike.”
“I think we should arm wrestle for it.”
“Fine. Absolutely. That sounds like a great idea.”
He narrowed his eyes. “You can’t use magic to cheat.”
“Oh, no. That wasn’t part of the challenge. I’m totally using magic.”
He was silent for a beat and then he exploded. “I’m not riding on the chick seat!”
“Do you care to place a wager on that?”
