A contemporary copy is in Bishop Buckingham’s Register at Lincoln, but this bears the incorrect date of 1397, an error that has often been copied. The will was published by Nichols (A Collection of All the Wills…) in 1780. The Latin text is reproduced by Armitage- Smith, and an English translation is given by Silva- Vigier. There are no grounds for accepting recent assertions that he was murdered on the orders of Henry IV (Jones, Who Murdered Chaucer).
