Julian has a friend in Jeff and a friend in Clarkie, and that’s all he needs. He and Clarkie take their shifts in the exercise/electricity generation room together (Jeff tried to name it the L-X-tricity room to combine the words, but everyone else vetoed the idea). Julian thought his life here would be too boring to want to endure, but it’s not so bad. First of all, where there are humans there is drama, people can’t seem to help it, and second of all, humans are adaptable. Was it maddening to be without TV at the beginning? Yes. But everyone adapted to either simpler pleasures or created a world in their own heads for entertainment. Julian was always living in his head in the other world, but in this one he finds he is comfortable with silences, and with the kind of soothing thinking that comes from some rote task: biking, pruning, stirring, organizing. He sets his mind on autopilot unless he’s in bed or telling Clarkie about what he did in bed. Clarkie is the only one even remotely amused by the details; everyone else is somehow allergic to kink still, after all these years. Julian doesn’t know how they even stay awake during sex with attitudes like that.
Just the fun new positions alone that they get into so they can stay active around Jeff’s growing bump is thrilling for Julian, the feel of that distended belly on his lower back as he holds onto his toes and Jeff fucks him standing … does everyone else really just start thinking of nothing but binkies and blankies? Julian thinks of binkies too, to be fair, but of their sexual potential first—it’s more fun that way.
“We should name the kid something really obnoxious and insist that everyone use it,” Julian suggest one night in the eighth month, the eleventh hour, as Jeff lays on his side and Julian uses his knuckles to massage his lower back. Nevermind how uncomfortable every pregnancy is, poor Jeff is over fifty years old, and though they all can’t help but live healthy and fit down here with their duties, it’s still taking a lot out of him. Talk about a surprise, this pregnancy is a big miracle.
“I was thinking Julian Junior, or Julia for a girl.”
“Jujube, Jubilee, Bijou Julie,” Julian murmurs at Jeff. “How about Jeffsmart, so they can all tell me that’s Jeff’s smart all day long.”
Jeff snorts. “We’d start a tiny war with that.”
“What do you want,” Julian asks him. “A boy or a girl?”
“Either, neither, both, I don’t care,” Jeff says. “As long as we get another survivor.”
