“Just tell me who you are, please,” Liz snapped. She was in no mood for this right now.
“Becky. My name’s Becky, I was on the show once.”
“The girl from the fish-and-chip shop? The girl with the Uzi?”
“Uh, violin actually.”
“What are you even doing with this number?”
“Well, I ... uh ...”
“God, you weren’t having an affair with him too were you?”
“Too?”
Liz took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “The number of girls who’ve called this number today, you’d think it was Dial-a-Casanova or something.”
The tone on the other end became suddenly very cold. “Other girls?”
“Yeah, I mean this hour alone there have been ... hello? Hello?”
Liz turned off the phone and tossed it in the bin. She was angry and knew she had no right to be. So Corsac was cheating on her, just as he had been cheating on his wife. It was mildly more annoying that Jack had been using the present she had bought him to have an affair with another woman, but that was beside the point.
Liz’s anger lasted only a moment, however, for she really did not care. (Yes, she did, but she could easily pretend otherwise.) If Corsac survived, he would spend the rest of his life with his family; he didn’t need Becky from the fish-and-chip shop turning up to spoil everything. In her own way, Liz felt she had even done the man some good. After all the mess she had caused of the man’s life, she had finally done something worthwhile.
She smiled to herself and laid an unconscious hand upon her belly. Yes, there was something else worthwhile she had done with Jack, not that he would ever find out about it. She had told him once and he had not believed her, but to tell him again would destroy his family forever.
Liz would keep it as her little secret. This time, she would do the right thing by everybody.
