    The Feminine Touch

“Maybe,” said Zoe. “I have to admit your child is less frightening than other small people. She’s growing on me.”

He laughed. “She’s the most amazing being ever to exist on the planet, come on.”

“You’re a bit biased,” she said, grinning.

“What? Me?” He pointed at himself.

      They both laughed.

He started for the kitchen. “Anyway, you should stick around. I’m going to get myself a soda, you want anything?”

      “Nash?” called Zoe.

He stopped and turned to her. “Yeah?”

“Can I ask you a question?”

      “Okay.”

“When did you change your mind about Siobhan? You were going to protect her identity, but then you did expose her. Why?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Because in the end, you were right, Zoe. She’s a killer. Maybe my feelings about her are complicated, but that doesn’t mean that what she’s doing is right.”

      “So, you think it’s wrong?”

“I think it doesn’t matter what I think,” he said. “What she’s doing is against the law, and it’s not my job to interpret it. It’s only my job to report what I know.”

      She nodded. “Yeah.”

He nodded. “So, you want a soda?”

“If you knew where she was—”

      “I don’t.”

“But if you found out, or she contacted you… you’d turn her in?”

Nash nodded. “Oh, definitely.” He turned away quickly.

Maybe he didn’t want to admit that he was a little bit glad she’d gotten away, though.
