She just suddenly knew she wasn’t alone in the apartment.
Heat reached for her gun, drawing it from its holster as silently as she could. She took another step, listening intently for the sound of breathing, or for the creak of a floorboard, or for any small noise that would indicate where the intruder was.
Then she heard: “You can put your weapon away, Captain.”
It was a man’s voice, a familiar one. But Heat couldn’t quite place it. With her weapon still raised she eased her free hand over toward a light switch and flicked it on.
Sitting there calmly in her mother’s favorite chair was a ruggedly handsome man with dark hair, dark eyes, a square jaw, and an impressive build.
Heat recognized him immediately. He had, very briefly, been a suspect in a case she had caught a few years earlier, about a currency trader who had been brutally murdered. She had since come to learn that he was considered one of the greatest assets of the US government, a man who had saved the world many times over.
“Derrick Storm?” she said in disbelief.
