“That was an unfortunate decision by one of the previous CEOs. Your wife sits here, I believe. Unharmed.”
Paloma shook her head. “Wrong response.”
“She does. Yes. Then you attacked Earth, went to war with us, killed hundreds of people, took my brothers and me hostage, and injected drugs meant to kill us into our bloodstream. You are still here on this side of the galaxy after repeatedly being told to leave, and are currently after a woman who has done nothing to you. I am sick to death of all the phony changing of CEOs as an excuse for what you people do.” Amari pointed to him. “No, we can’t negotiate. No, we can’t do business or come to terms. Ever.”
Hunter was a blur of movement as he held the representative by his throat. A second later he held the man’s head under water in one of the small waterfall features in the room. Everyone was silent. This was not the first time I’d seen Hunter kill someone. It wouldn’t be the last. It was never Amari, although he always sanctioned it, and it was never Shane, although he could have done it, too. This was Hunter’s role because he’d made it his role.
I rose and walked slowly to him. Amari was done. He’d turned his back on the rest of the representatives who now shook in their seats. I glanced at them. “Run away. Run fast. Go back through the black hole. Tell your CEOs and your board they are not welcome here on this side of the galaxy. If you continue to force us to chase you through the Dark Planets, you will wish you’d never been born. Unless the rest of you want to drown in our waters, then you need to run away. Now.”
They listened to me. The four remaining men fled the room faster than I would have thought they could. Hunter stepped away from the now drowned man. His gaze found my own, and I put my hand out for him to take it. Let whoever watched us on that feed see we were united, that we were one family, that we were not playing games.
“Any member of the Evander Corporation who steps foot on Earth to do anything but surrender will find themselves drowned in our waters.” It was Shane who spoke.
These were my husbands. They were brutal. They were rough. They had no mercy for their enemies. They could bend air and energy. They defeated their enemies and survived assaults thrown at them from every direction.
They held the loyalty of thousands of men who counted on them for their safety and their futures.
And I loved them. Beyond reason, beyond war, beyond sense. I was Amber Chen. Earth was closed to Evander.
