The elevator dings. Jo and Roscoe rush into the waiting room, carrying gift bags stuffed to the brim. Jo deposits the bags on a chair and picks up Gemma, kissing her on both cheeks. “How’s my big girl?” She smiles at me, her face lighting up at the sight of the baby. “Well, don’t keep us all in suspense, Dr. Maddox. What’s the little love’s name?”
“Excuse me,” a nurse says from the nurses’ station. “Will you please just tell everyone if it’s a boy or girl so we can clear out this waiting room? We’re breaking the fire code.”
“Okay, sorry. I’d like you all to meet…Aiden Andrew Maddox.”
“Yes!” Arthur jumps up and down and does a fist pump. “Finally another boy!”
Amanda sticks her tongue out at him. She and Annabeth come over to have a closer look at Aiden.
“Well, okay, I guess he’ll do,” Amanda says.
“Good. I think he likes you already.”
“Me too, Uncle Jack?” Annabeth asks.
“Yep, you too.”
She giggles.
“I better bring this little guy back to his mama so she can feed him.”
Jesse comes over and gives me a one-armed hug, smiling when his nephew grips his pinky with his tiny hand. “I can’t wait to take him fishing. You did good, big brother. Real good.”
I look around, smiling at the very different people who now make up my family. “Yeah, I did. I really did.”
