The Return

     The Return

After eleven years, Rushika realizes that returning home isn't that easy. Especially since she has a promise to keep.Constable Elizabeth West, Australia's greatest export, turns up in the North of England tracking a murderer across the Yorkshire Moors. Goyt Hall is a big old country house and lying dead, in front of the fireplace, is a beautiful young girl. Reviews: 'I'm delighted to have found Thorogood's books. Have raced through the Jack Hamma series and presently on 6th Elizabeth West. Googled his mini biography, fascinating! He really has been around the traps, no wonder he can produce volume after volume of improbable crazy exploits with that background to draw on, although it did have me wondering if he ever had time to sleep.''Not crazy like the rest of the books in the series but the book that inspired bedlam deserves to be read for itself alone. I'm the number one member of the Elizabeth West fan club so I had to read this book.''The stories that inspired the craziest whodunits ever written. I love the serious but tongue in cheek style.'

I Didn't Mean to Kill My Best Friend

      Kamuela Kaneshiro
I Didn't Mean to Kill My Best Friend

A comedic, entertaining look at the difficulties associated with disposing the body of a friend.Getting rid of an article of trash can be difficult, there never seems to be any rubbish bins around when you need one. However this is a simple chore compared to the frustration and complexity of disposing a friend’s dead body."I Didn’t Mean to Kill My Best Friend" is a novella about two friends and their quest to dispose of a mutual friend’s body. Throughout the night, the duo is faced with various obstacles that prevent them from accomplishing their goal. "I Didn’t Mean to Kill My Best Friend" is a comedic, entertaining look at the difficulties associated with this grim task.*Featured ebook at the San Diego Comic-Con 2012Warning:Mild use of strong language and violent situations.Word count: 12,172What people are saying about this book:Rebecca Hurst (5 out of 5) - U.K.Brilliantly funny!A wonderful debut, sharp and witty with a distinctly fresh writing style and new approach to the genre. This novella, 'I didn't mean to kill my best friend' is an intelligent investigation of the relationship of two friends, and uses the murder of their mutual friend to explore how little things about your friendship can lead to the stickiest of ends! What I loved most about this book was the visual elements, and I could very well imagine it as a manga, illustrated novel and film. ------------Defaye (5 out of 5) - U.K.Exciting, Funny, Thrilling.A really entertaining short story. Read it in one session and was glued to it. If you like a bit of a thrill, the plot is bang on. The story revolves around two friends trying to ditch their murdered, mutual friend. Coupled along the way with satirical humour and moments of suspense. Can already imagine a film adaptation. ------------Sheila Deeth (4 out of 5) - U.S.Grim, humorous, odd and a fun short tale. Two Steves make the beginning of this short story a little confusing, but the confusion's part of the tale so it has to be excused. The characters aren't particularly pleasing, but their dilemma evokes memories of comedy movies and there's an enjoyable inevitability to their inept efforts to both salve their consciences and get rid of the best friend / worst enemy's body. While the conclusion is bounded by odd coincidence it has a certain logic of its own, preset by the story's direction. And there are some cleverly amusing discussions on the nature of life, death and relationships. The author has a nice touch with dialog and a casual off-beat humor. And the first person narration, mixing present tense thoughts with action in past tense, works surprisingly well.Short, definitely not sweet, but entertaining in a grimly satirical way.

    The Tattered Thread

      B. A. Braxton
     The Tattered Thread

When all hope is gone and there’s nothing left to live for, suicide may be your only option. Tasia McAvoy knows this feeling all too well. Rich and beautiful, Tasia seems to have everything a person could ever want. But her deepest, darkest secrets are catching up with her, and she’s just too tired to run away from them anymore.Carlyle Kastenmeier is a successful businessman who routinely amuses himself by controlling the lives of his wife, his son, his brother, his mistress, and his many employees. He also has a nasty habit of belittling others, delighting in making them feel incompetent and insignificant. And he emphasizes this point by tying a piece of red thread around their fingers to humiliate them, and only he is allowed to take it off.Lois, Carl’s wife, stays with him because he gives her everything she wants except his love. Carl’s employees stay with him because he pays them three times what their services are worth. Everyone justifies tolerating his abuse by telling themselves that the pay is good.Witness the story’s events through the eyes of Elaine Kostas, a maid recently hired by the Kastenmeiers. She observes as Detective Rein Connery tries to figure out who beat Carl with his own walking stick, cut him with a straight razor, and then left him to bleed out on the bathroom floor. It seems as if everyone is a suspect. Tasia McAvoy, Carl’s mistress, tried to leave him just months before his murder, but he forced her to come back. Carl’s bitter wife had to sign a prenuptial agreement relinquishing any right to his estate before he would marry her. Silas, their son, is a seven-year-old genius who certainly has the wherewithal, the intelligence, and the motives to kill his father. Vic Kastenmeier, Carl’s brilliant, alcoholic brother, had discovered a formula for an ideal oil paint varnish twenty years ago, but Carl took it away from him and built his fortune on the varnish’s manufacture and sale. Meanwhile, Vic is a pauper who depends on his brother’s assistance to live.Nicolette Howard oversees the sale and distribution of Carl Kastenmeier’s varnish and related products. Of late, Carl has been threatening to take away many of her duties and give them to one of her colleagues, Marlon McGhee. Marlon is in no way as talented or as bright as Nicolette, but Carl loves to tease her by suggesting that Marlon could easily take her place. Marlon, on the other hand, believes that he is being promoted when really it’s just another one of Carl’s practical jokes. Cameron Dmytryk, Carl’s chauffeur, hates his boss for many reasons, but most especially because of his condescending attitude. Zachary Cutteridge is the Kastenmeier’s painter and landscaper who is fired after Carl discovers that Zach is having an affair with Tasia. So, who killed Carlyle Kastenmeier? Read on as Detective Rein Connery sorts through the anger and animosity to get at the truth.

    The Front

      Patricia Cornwell
     The Front

At Risk featured Massachusetts state investigator Win Garano, a shrewd man of mixed-race background and a notinconsiderable chip on his shoulder; District Attorney Monique Lamont, a hard-charging woman with powerful ambitions and a troubling willingness to cut corners; and Garano’s grandmother, who has certain unpredictable talents that you ignore at your peril. And in The Front, peril is what comes to them all. D.A. Lamont has a special job for Garano. As part of a new public relations campaign about the dangers of declining neighborhoods, she’s sending him to Watertown to “come up with a drama,” and she thinks she knows just the case that will serve. Garano is very skeptical, because he knows that Watertown is also the home base for a loose association of municipal police departments called the FRONT, set up in order that they don’t have to be so dependent on the state—much to Lamont’s anger. He senses a much deeper agenda here—but he has no idea just how deep it goes. In the days that follow, he’ll find that Lamont’s task, and the places it leads him, will resemble a house of mirrors—everywhere he turns, he’s not quite sure if what he’s seeing is true.

But now, for the first time in ages, she's also clean and sober, just out of rehab, and on a cross-country trip to reunite with her estranged little boy. Enter psychotic mercenary Isaiah Brown with a proposal that scratches at her oldest itch, something Letty has dreamed of all her life-the ultimate Vegas score.     The Bad Poet

      Michael Paul Fuller
     The Bad Poet

This book is a thriller, its suspenseful, romantic, mysterious. It touches on many levels of friendship. There is the friendship of a mother and daughter, a man and a woman, women best friends and friendships that are acquired in the chat room. It is a page turner with many unexpected twists. This story paints a unique portrait of multilayered life lessons that unfold carrying a dark side. You never know about people. Human predictability is the singular thing that mathematicians and scientists cannot calculate with 100% accuracy. The human chemistry ebbs and flows from second to second where only one thing is certain, and that is unpredictability. Just as in one’s own decision making, where life’s twist and turns will eventually dictate your final decision, sometimes even when you know it is the wrong choice. The time an individual spends on earth is as small as a tiny pebble tumbling down the Grand Canyon. We should spend it as wisely as possible by measuring each day, hour, minute and second given to us. Life is a fleeting spirit and with each breath worthy of congratulations as it is given only by the grace of God. We must cherish it, and nurture every moment as our transitory time marches to an end. An end that man has been studying, writing songs, creating stories about and trying to beat, since the beginning of his existence. The tragedy of 9-11 changed many things for Americans that will never be the same. In the cloudy days soon thereafter, Carla King’s husband disappeared without a trace and she was left with their daughter to survive. After their divorce, she was living a mundane life one day at a time when one night while out with friends, she runs into Cutino Grigsby, her mister right. From the start, time spent with Cutino was adventurous and lustful, gregarious and fanciful free. They danced the Marengo on the Bay of Biscay and flew with the doves over mountains of joy. Their impromptu travels to faraway places and gifts from Cutino blinded her from any negative judgments about him. His physical appearance was striking and his confidence brought her security and made Carla take a note of admiration. But it is his deceit that teaches her the most, as her renaissance man will bring changes into her life that she never anticipates. She must hang on for the ride towards a crossroad of life which could land her in deep water, or even her demise.
