Ignoring the advice, he takes the job, but it is not long before Welton Keynes realizes something strange and dangerous is taking place in Miss Ferriby's house. There are her mysterious clients, wealthy men and women coming to attend her séances. Although the large house is well kept, there seem to be no servants apart from the footman who is strangely out of place in that role. Welton decides to explore behind the locked doors. It was written in 1910 when political correctness in fiction was not even on the horizon, and the main suspect was often physically disabled or disfigured (as here) to make him or her appear more evil. Note that the physical descriptions of the characters are from the original book. It's how writers wrote, and what readers read. Be warned: Miss Ferriby will carry on living in the some dark corner of your mind long after you have finished the story.

    The Little House

      Philippa Gregory
     The Little House

A contemporary psychological thriller in the style of Ruth Rendell, from one of today's most versatile and compelling storytellers. It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up… Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity. Laying bare the comfortable conventions of rural England, this spine-tingling novel pulses with suspense until the whiplash double-twist of the denouement.

    Charlie Spark - Villain Extraordinaire

      J M S Macfarlane
     Charlie Spark - Villain Extraordinaire

This book is satirical - the genre is comedy. For a laugh. An ex-copper actually thought it was about real life. Now, that really is funny. It's about professional criminals playing games with the police, the courts and other criminals. It's an excursion in gentlemanly outfoxing, chicanery, double-dealing and one-upmanship in London and the English countryside. Policemen won't be amused.Around thirty years ago, the leading criminal lawyer in London had the most important cases in the country which were being heard in court no.1 at the Old Bailey. But, at the end of every day, you could hear the sound of laughter coming from his office as he and his colleagues talked about the day's events. Certain professional criminals like to play games with the police, the courts, their targets and other criminals. They try to gain control over everything and everyone, including judges - and especially the loot. They can be accomplished actors, charming, persuasive or experts in flattery. And the games that they play can often be absurd. The class system gives them the opportunity to become any character they want to be so that sometimes it can be difficult to tell who the real criminals are. This is an "excursion in gentlemanly outfoxing, chicanery, double-dealing and one-upmanship in London and the English countryside.
