    The Second Corollary

      Martin Thompson
     The Second Corollary

The defensive nature of the ego, well-known in everyday life to even the most casual observer, is actually far, far more pervasive than any sane person might have dreamed, and it can clearly make people believe just about anything, if it, the ego, 'thinks' it is good for them (or it). Two psychology students decide to use hypnosis to discover just what realities the ego might be hiding from us...Saturdays are not a day of rest for the self-proclaimed number one Fury from hell. The furry Fury is back on the case, only this time, it’s about as far from what she does and who she is as a Fury can get. Jasmine’s new assignment is a collection nightmare. She’s been sent after a soul that has nothing to do with scorned women. Is it because she’s the best or because she’s dispensable? But when it’s Daddy Dearest giving the assignment you just can’t say ‘no’.In the course of her collection, Jasmine stumbles upon another mystery. If a Fury had to be hauled in to collect on this wayward signer, where are all the demons that tried before? Demons and Furies have been disappearing for centuries and no one can figure out what is going on. The only link was the last assignment any of them received. The same assignment Jasmine now has. It’s up to Jasmine to crack the case and bring the promised soul home. If not, she might find out what’s worse than being stuck in a furry suit. For Jasmine, failure is not an option. What’s a Fury to do when all the luck is against her? Win of course. She’s going to solve this mystery and show the upstart demons of hell that there’s more to this Fury than just a pretty face.

Most science fiction novels are plot driven. While the Parallel Conspiracy’s plot is very intense and a seat-of-your-pants adventure, it’s really the characters that grip you the most as they work their way through the mystery they have to solve. Although there is lots of friction and a romantic triangle develops between the main characters, they ultimately grow as individuals and as a group from the experience. It's also a unique blend of mystery, adventure and romance all rolled into a high tech science fiction novel. I think this combination also sets it apart from other scifi thrillers you'll readQ: Speaking of characters, you have some very strong female lead characters in the book. Did you find that aspect a challenge to write. A: While I suppose it’s easier for a man to write male characters and the opposite goes for women authors, I didn’t really focus on gender differences that much. I did of course have some. You have too. What I concentrated on more though was the unique emotional state of each character; how they would grow through the intense, life and death experiences they continue to be pushed into throughout the novel. Q: You used humor throughout the book. Can you explain its role in the novel?A: The novel is by no means a comedy, but I did slip funny things in from time to time. My main male character is a computer programmer who is stepped on continuously by his wife, boss and co-workers. To get somewhat of a feeling of this ridicule, earlier scenes with him are written in a more humorous manner. As the story progresses and the character changes, my treatment of him does too. He is no longer to be laughed at but respected instead. There is of course a risk that the reader will think it’s not an intense action thriller when they start reading the novel, but it was a deliberate tactic that I used. Hopefully it works

A discreet advertisement brings a group of apparently disparate individuals together to a bizarre rendezvous – on the ocean floor. The reasons for their selection are unclear: Don, an archaeologist, chronically shy, Gaspar, marine biologist, suffering from terminal directness, middle-aged Pacifica, and Melanie, whose normal exterior masks a strange genetic inheritance, seem, on the face of it, to have little in common – except their feeling that they are part of a greater plan ... a feeling that grows as they embark on their strange odyssey across the bed of the ocean ... For the underwater explorers, the mystery of being out of phase with the world above water is heightened by that surrounding the mysterious Eleph – a mystery which is ultimately revealed to be more significant and bewildering than they could ever have imagined ...

Slippage: Previously Uncollected, Precariously Poised Stories

      Harlan Ellison
Slippage: Previously Uncollected, Precariously Poised Stories

Harlan Ellison is undoubtedly one of the most audacious, infuriating, brazen characters on the planet. Which may help explain why he is also one of the most brilliant, innovative, and eloquent writers on earth. Slippage simply presents recent, typical Ellison. In a word, masterful. The 21 stories in this 1997 collection, which is encased in black boxes, show Ellison at the height of his powers, with several of the stories (no surprise here) major award-winners. Highlights include a black mind reader who pays a visit to a white serial killer, a husband who falls prey to a vampiric personal computer, and a love affair between a young man and a woman who may be more undead than alive. Perhaps even more fascinating are the painfully candid snapshots of autobiography running throughout the volume. Even if Ellison's unsettling fictions are not enough to dazzle you, his often bizarre life experiences as an author will still keep you compulsively turning the page like a polite voyeur. --Stanley Wiater Contents: The Man Who Rowed Christopher Columbus Ashore (1992) Anywhere but Here, with Anybody but You (1996) Crazy as a Soup Sandwich (1989) Darkness upon the Face of the Deep (1991) The Pale Silver Dollar of the Moon Pays Its Way and Makes Change: Version 1 (1997) The Pale Silver Dollar of the Moon Pays Its Way and Makes Change: Version 2 (1994) The Lingering Scent of Woodsmoke (1996) The Museum on Cyclops Avenue (1995) Go toward the Light (1996) Mefisto in Onyx (1993) Where I Shall Dwell in the Next World (1992) Chatting with Anubis (1995) The Few, the Proud (1989) The Deadly "Nackles" Affair (1987) essay Nackles (1964) Nackles (1987) Sensible City (1994) The Dragon on the Bookshelf (1995) with Robert Silverberg Keyboard (1995) Jane Doe #112 (1990) The Dreams a Nightmare Dreams (1997) Pulling Hard Time (1995) Scartaris, June 28th (1990) She's a Young Thing and Cannot Leave Her Mother (1988) Midnight in the Sunken Cathedral (1995)
