     Sunstorm

When Sir Arthur C. Clarke, the greatest science fiction writer ever, teams up with award-winning author Stephen Baxter, who shares Clarke’s bold vision of a future where technology and humanism advance hand in hand, the result is bound to be a book of stellar ambition and accomplishment. Such was the case with Time’s Eye. Now, in the highly anticipated sequel, Clarke and Baxter draw their epic to a triumphant conclusion that is as mind-blowing as anything in Clarke’s famous Space Odyssey series. SUNSTORM Returned to the Earth of 2037 by the Firstborn, mysterious beings of almost limitless technological prowess, Bisesa Dutt is haunted by the memories of her five years spent on the strange alternate Earth called Mir, a jigsaw-puzzle world made up of lands and people cut out of different eras of Earth’s history. Why did the Firstborn create Mir? Why was Bisesa taken there and then brought back on the day after her original disappearance? Bisesa’s questions receive a chilling answer when scientists discover an anomaly in the sun’s core–an anomaly that has no natural cause is evidence of alien intervention over two thousand years before. Now plans set in motion millennia ago by inscrutable watchers light-years away are coming to fruition in a sunstorm designed to scour the Earth of all life in a bombardment of deadly radiation. Thus commences a furious race against a ticking solar time bomb. But even now, as apocalypse looms, cooperation is not easy for the peoples and nations of the Earth. Religious and political differences threaten to undermine every effort. And all the while, the Firstborn are watching... From the Hardcover edition.

Thirteen years later, Dr. Roy Thompson, an astronomer in British Columbia, is the first of his race to discover the comet. Weeks of study will be needed to plot its course. In the meantime, his home is in total disarray; he and his family need a new housekeeper. Applying for the job is Madame Caidoz…a professional psychic who claims to have been drawn to the area and compelled to apply for this job. Mr. Thompson is desperate. He and his two children, Martin and Jenny, can’t keep up with the workload themselves. Thirteen-year-old, Jenny, is instantly attracted to the strange new housekeeper and they quickly become friends. Her full name is Rellet Caidoz, but Jenny soon comes to know her as just, Relli. Relli feels relieved to finally be in the situation that has been nagging her for most of her life. Relli reveals that she believes Jenny is destined for great things. “But not greatness in the way we understand it, far beyond that, beyond our little place in the cosmos,” Relli told Jenny. “The enormity of your endeavors will not be on a local scale, or even a global level, but will span the galaxy. I see the name Jenny of Earth, emblazoned across the cosmos, and held in the highest esteem.” “Don’t ask me how or why Jenny, but you have been chosen to achieve great deeds, heroic acts of immense significance. I was sent here to help guide you on this path.” Despite Jenny’s reluctance to accept Relli’s visions, circumstances keep leading Jenny in that direction, particularly when her father divulges the disastrous path of the comet. Earth is not prepared for the threat, and Mr. Thompson knows it. Relli sees a faint hope to be saved from the comet. The faint hope comes along the same path as the fast approaching comet, and whatever this faint hope is; Jenny needs to partner with it. It is Earth’s only chance, and Jenny accepts the responsibility. Come and join Jenny on her first of many adventures as she finds herself, “Chasing the Killer Comet.”

    The Invention of Morel

      Adolfo Bioy Casares
     The Invention of Morel

Jorge Luis Borges declared The Invention of Morel a masterpiece of plotting, comparable to The Turn of the Screw and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Set on a mysterious island, Bioy's novella is a story of suspense and exploration, as well as a wonderfully unlikely romance, in which every detail is at once crystal clear and deeply mysterious.  Inspired by Bioy Casares's fascination with the movie star Louise Brooks, The Invention of Morel has gone on to live a secret life of its own. Greatly admired by Julio Cortázar, Gabriel García Márquez, and Octavio Paz, the novella helped to usher in Latin American fiction's now famous postwar boom. As the model for Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet's Last Year in Marienbad, it also changed the history of film.

    A Honeymoon in Space

      George Chetwynd Griffith
     A Honeymoon in Space

The situation was one which was absolutely without parallel in all the history of courtship from the days of Mother Eve to those of Miss Lilla Zaidie Rennick. The nearest approach to it would have been the old-fashioned Tartar custom which made it lawful for a man to steal his best girl, if he could get her first, fling her across his horse's crupper and ride away with her to his tent. But to the shocked senses of Mrs. Van Stuyler the present adventure appeared a great deal more terrible than that. Both Zaidie and herself had sprung to their feet as soon as the upward rush of the Astronef had slackened and they were released from their seats. They looked down through the glass walls of what may be called the hurricane deck-chamber of the Astronef, and saw below them a snowy sea of clouds just crimsoned by the rising sun. In this cloud-sea, which spread like a wide-meshed veil between them and the earth, there were great irregular rifts which looked as big as continents on a map. These had a blue-grey background, or it might be more correct to say under-ground, and in the midst of one of these they saw a little black speck which after a moment or two took the shape of a little toy ship, and presently they recognised it as the eleven-thousand-ton liner which a few moments ago had been their ocean home.

    The Crack of Doom

      Robert Cromie
     The Crack of Doom

The rough notes from which this narrative has been constructed were given to me by the man who tells the story. For obvious reasons I have altered the names of the principals, and I hereby pass on the assurance which I have received, that the originals of such as are left alive can be found if their discovery be thought desirable. This alteration of names, the piecing together of somewhat disconnected and sometimes nearly indecipherable memoranda, and the reduction of the mass to consecutive form, are all that has been required of me or would have been permitted to me. The expedition to Labrador mentioned by the narrator has not returned, nor has it ever been definitely traced. He does not undertake to prove that it ever set out. But he avers that all which is hereafter set down is truly told, and he leaves it to mankind to accept the warning which it has fallen to him to convey, or await the proof of its sincerity which he believes the end of the century will produce.
