Madeleine's Drug

     Madeleine's Drug

The future: work is a luxury, mating a duty and sex a drug. What will you take to survive? In the future Great Brighton, the administration has turned work into a luxury, which it doles out grudgingly. You take what you can of it, and outside of work, you take what you like. Madeleine takes Oratory. It sounds harmless, but in a society where mating is a duty but sex is a drug, can anything really be what it seems? Where will Madeleine’s addiction lead her once her only attempt at rebellion fails? Dark future, good reading from Bryan Murphy.

The Final Flight of the Phaseship Lelantos: Part 3

      Cory Mccoy
The Final Flight of the Phaseship Lelantos: Part 3

Part 3 of the epic space operaAngie Tanaka, a professional thief, has an uneasy friendship with Daiyu, a dragon who has been around since China was a collection of mud huts. This is the first of a series of interviews with an ancient dragon who struggles to live down her past. And she has such a lot of it to live down. Excerpt:Daiyu wore a black leather jacket, tight black pants and her short hair was all spiky and dangerous looking. She has a black dragon tattoo that winds around her neck and up the right side of her face. The dragon's head rests above her right eye.She sat across the little table from me and lifted the ancient tea cup. “Good Morning, Angela.”I hate being called anything but Angie. Of course, she knows that.“Good morning, Daiyu. Thank you for doing this.”She tilted her head a sixteenth of an inch and sipped her tea. What do you talk about with someone who has witnessed a big hunk of history, someone who can flawlessly speak every human language, someone who can shape-shift and look like anybody or anything they want? It's hard to narrow down the questions because there are too many. So I decided to start with something obvious.“How old are you?”

    Tales of Pirx the Pilot

      Stanisław Lem
     Tales of Pirx the Pilot

In Pilot Pirx, Lem has created an irresistibly likable character: an astronaut who gives the impression of still navigating by the seat of his pants-a bumbler but an inspired one. By investing Pirx with a range of human foibles, Lem offers a wonderful vision of the audacity, childlike curiosity, and intuition that can give humans the courage to confront outer space.     Old Man's War

      John Scalzi
     Old Man's War

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce-- and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity's resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force. Everybody knows that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don't want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You'll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You'll serve two years at the front. And if you survive, you'll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets. John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine--and what he will become is far stranger.
