    The Chain of Chance

      Stanisław Lem
     The Chain of Chance

Written in the style of a detective novel, The Chain of Chance is classic Lem: a combination of action, hard science, and philosophical investigation. An ex-astronaut is hired to look into the death of several wealthy businessmen. The authorities suspect a pattern, but neither the police nor a supercomputer enlisted for the investigation can crack the case. On a trail leading across Europe, the ex-astronaut barely escapes numerous attempts on his life. Having set himself up as a potential victim, he realizes that he may now be the target of a conspiracy--and that the conspiracy is not the work of a criminal mind, but a manifestation of the laws of nature. Certain patterns have begun to emerge from the chaos of modern society. Some of those patterns can be fatal. . .

    Dhalgren

      Samuel R. Delany
     Dhalgren

A mysterious disaster has stricken the midwestern American city of Bellona, and its aftereffects are disturbing: a city block burns down and is intact a week later; clouds cover the sky for weeks, then part to reveal two moons; a week passes for one person when only a day passes for another. The catastrophe is confined to Bellona, and most of the inhabitants have fled. But others are drawn to the devastated city, among them the Kid, a white/American Indian man who can't remember his own name. The Kid is emblematic of those who live in the new Bellona, who are the young, the poor, the mad, the violent, the outcast--the marginalized. Dhalgren is many things, but instantly accessible isn't one of them. While most of this big, ambitious, deeply detailed novel is beautifully pellucid, the opening pages will be difficult for some: the novel starts with the second half of an incomplete sentence, in the viewpoint of a man who doesn't know who he is. If you find the early pages rough going, push on; the story soon becomes clear and fascinating. But - fair warning - the central nature of the disaster, of its strange devastations and disruptions, remains a puzzle for many readers, sometimes after several readings.

    Harmony Season 2

     Harmony Season 2

Survivors of Harmony are now back on Earth. Earth is not how they expected. The alien vampire horde are on Earth and they conquered most cities. Flying saucer roam the sky and alien horde roam the land. Humans are now an endangered species and they are hunted down for their blood. Will the humans survive this?Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.[1] Modern biology is a vast and eclectic field, composed of many branches and subdisciplines. However, despite the broad scope of biology, there are certain general and unifying concepts within it that govern all study and research, consolidating it into single, coherent fields. In general, biology recognizes the cell as the basic unit of life, genes as the basic unit of heredity, and evolution as the engine that propels the synthesis and creation of new species. It is also understood today that all organisms survive by consuming and transforming energy and by regulating their internal environment to maintain a stable and vital condition.

    Creatures of the Abyss

      Murray Leinster
     Creatures of the Abyss

A radar expert named Terry Holt is recruited as part of a scientific expedition in the Philippines; his mission: to build specific types of underwater listening devices that are to be used as part of an unknown agenda. Frustrated that he is expected to work on his inventions without being given any answers, Holt looks for the truth on his own, and what he finds is completely unexpected!Creatures of the Abyss is a novel remnant of the works of giants such as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, Murray Leinster managing to take sci-fi to the next level without the addition of robots, spaceships or anything else you might expect to see in a modern day science fiction book or movie. The nature of the illusive plot and the unique setting are enough to cloud this novel in complete darkness for the reader to gradually discover its many facets and mysteries. We are thrown into a world where unusual catches of fish and a mysterious disappearing vessel have attracted the attention, as well as the caution of the scientific community, bent on finding out the truth behind the strange "orejas de ellos" (things who listen) that were given as the sole explanation behind these happenings, by local fishermen. If you're interested in sci-fi even remotely, you will be completely captivated by this brilliant novel. Although overall basic and lacking the complexity of many sci-fi works you may be accustomed with, you will find its simplicity to be all but addictive, and the unknown and unpredictable events encountered by the main protagonists will play an important role in creating one of the most intriguing and exciting plots in modern sci-fi history.Creatures of the Abyss is well worth reading by anyone who may be interested in an adventure and mystery novel as well, its less pronounced association with "standard" science fiction stereotypes giving it an added dimension of imaginative expression and sheer fun.

     Misspent Youth

Readers have learned to expect the unexpected from Peter F. Hamilton. Now the master of space opera focuses on near-future Earth and one most unusual family. The result is a coming-of-age tale like no other. By turns comic, erotic, and tragic, Misspent Youth is a profound and timely exploration of all that divides and unites fathers and sons, men and women, the young and the old. After decades of concentrated research and experimentation in the field of genetic engineering, scientists of the European Union believe they have at last conquered humankind’s most pernicious foe: old age. For the first time, technology holds out the promise of not merely slowing the aging process but actually reversing it. The ancient dream of the Fountain of Youth seems at hand. The first subject for treatment is seventy-eight-year-old philanthropist Jeff Baker. After eighteen months in a rejuvenation tank, Jeff emerges looking like a twenty-year-old. And the change is more than skin deep. From his hair cells down to his DNA, Jeff is twenty–with a breadth of life experience. But while possessing the wisdom of a septuagenarian at age twenty is one thing, raging testosterone is another, as Jeff discovers when he attempts to pick up his life where he left off. Suddenly his oldest friends seem, well, old. Jeff’s trophy wife looks better than she ever did. His teenage son, Tim, is more like a younger brother. And Tim’s nubile girlfriend is a conquest too tempting to resist. Jeff’s rejuvenated libido wreaks havoc on the lives of his friends and family, straining his relationship with Tim to the breaking point. It’s as if youth is a drug and Jeff is wasted on it. But if so, it’s an addiction he has no interest in kicking. As Jeff’s personal life spirals out of control, the European Union undergoes a parallel meltdown, attacked by shadowy separatist groups whose violent actions earn both condemnation and applause. Now, in one terrifying instant, the personal and the political will intersect, and neither Jeff nor Tim–or the Union itself–will ever be the same again. From the Hardcover edition.
