     Night of the Aurochs

Dalton Trumbo’s posthumous work, this novel tells the story of an old unrepentant Nazi official named Grieben. Former chief of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the protagonist is motivated by a boundless desire for power & by what seems to be an inability to receive love. In autobiographical form, Grieben ensnares us in the sadism of his youth, the cruelty of his relationship with a woman who was half-Jewish & the indescribable horror of the Holocaust.

Banding together with other small town settlements, they begin a massive project to refurbish the railroad between Woodbury and Atlanta. The safer travel will begin a new post-apocalyptic era of trade, progress, and democracy. Little do they know, however, that trouble is brewing back home … Out of nowhere, a brutal new faction has attacked Woodbury while Lilly and the others have been off repairing the railroad. Now the barricades are burning. Adults have been murdered, children kidnapped. But why? Why subject innocent survivors to such a random, unprovoked assault? Lilly Caul and her ragtag posse of rescuers will soon discover the chilling answers to these questions and more as they launch a desperate mission to save the kidnapped children. But along the way, the dark odyssey will take them into a nightmarish series of traps and hellish encounters with incomprehensible swarms of undead. As legend has it such people are called Death’s Time Keepers. This story’s about one such timekeeper who falls in love with a girl who is no less than an angel for him. At the end of it however he knows it’s time for her to die. Will he be able to sacrifice his immortality for her? She said, “Oh Mark, tell me my favorite story just one last time.”I looked into her eyes with my heart filled with pain and my eyes with helplessness. I decided to fulfill her last request; I held her hands and said. “So this is how it began, All through my childhood I was seen as a bad omen. While life kept on surprising me with a new misery every day, the worst was yet to come. One afternoon at my grandparent’s house I found myself all alone in the cellar, exploring junk and found an old chest. Anxious as to what lied in it; I forced to break it open with no real luck. Then I remembered about the unusual gift that I got from my step grand dad on my tenth Birthday. I searched for the key tied around my neck which I had carried ever since. I tried my luck with the key to open the chest and it easily opened up. Inside was an ancient sand watch which read, ‘The Death Clock’ My heart sank as I felt an unusual rush of blood through my veins; the basement quickly was turning into a dark hole from which I would never get out of and to add to my misery, Death’s own clock in my hand. It was then I became the Death’s Time keeper.”

    Antioch

      William Harlan
     Antioch

"Armageddon is arrived." Threatened by an unnatural plague that raises the dead, an ancient order of mystics must choose between keeping its secrets and saving humanity.Kind of like Star Wars with zombies."This is a great fantasy adventure novel with plenty of sword fighting and monsters (zombies), but the heart of the book is its characters, complex story and clean, imaginative prose. From the pious yet conflicted paladin Michael to the loudmouthed but lovable sailor Ditch, the characters in Antioch are multifaceted and unique. There are no stereotypes within these pages, yet through the use of humor and seamless dialog, the characters are relatable and believable. This is a rarity in books even by many seasoned authors. The story begins with slaughter and mystery, then turns to small-town life under the shadow of fear as the citizens of Antioch prepare for Armageddon. Still, questions about the origin and nature of the plague remain and the eventual discovery of the answers is as exciting as the final showdown with death. My only complaint is that the story is left unfinished, and like everyone else who reads Antioch, I have to wait for the rest of the series to discover the final fate of my favorite characters and the answers to all my questions. The writing in Antioch is clear and precise. I can testify that the author agonized over every word, and it shows in the careful phrasing and brilliant imagery of the story. This, in my opinion, is the mark of a not just a great book, but a great writer.Highly recommended for any fantasy fan."Carolyn Harlan, Editor.
