The October Country

      Ray Bradbury
     The October Country

Ray Bradbury's first short story collection is back in print, its chilling encounters with funhouse mirrors, parasitic accident-watchers, and strange poker chips intact. Both sides of Bradbury's vaunted childhood nostalgia are also on display, in the celebratory "Uncle Einar," and haunting "The Lake," the latter a fine elegy to childhood loss. This edition features a new introduction by Bradbury, an invaluable essay on writing, wherein the author tells of his "Theater of Morning Voices," and, by inference, encourages you to listen to the same murmurings in yourself. And has any writer anywhere ever made such good use of exclamation marks!?

Chaos ripples across the pond and the two find themselves fleeing for their lives.Nothing makes sense. What is after them? What do they want? Most disturbing of all: why do they want them?Bonus content: chapter one of my coming of age horror novel "Fall Leaves and the Black Dragon" Excerpt:“You’ll get him next time, son!” his father assured him. “Probably need to put another worm on now.”Dave kept reeling his line then stopped when the bobber was nearly to the shore.“Hey look dad, a turtle!” Dave was pointing out toward the center of the pond.Greg squinted through the bright sunlight reflecting off the water out to where his son was pointing. A small, dark curve was floating on the water. “Yep I think you’re right!”“Can we catch it, dad?”“Now that wouldn’t be very fa-” Greg’s eyes widened in confusion and caused Dave to reevaluate what he thought was a turtle. It rose further out of the water.

Dick and Isaac Asimov.Ordo Lupus and the Temple Gate - from the author:I had been pursuing a theological interest in the Cathars; first though reading a number of books by Henry Lincoln and later an interest in Monségur and the Rennes-le-Château, near where the lost treasure of the Cathars is said to be hidden. The Cathars were an ancient sect who came to prominence and were ruthlessly persecuted by the Catholics in the 1300s, mainly in and around the Languedoc Region of France. They believed that the Christian god was really Rex Mundi, or 'God of Earth.'The second theme I wanted to get into my novel was the gothic. The themes of blood, death, eroticism, sex and transcendence are all things that I desire in a good novel. My influences were Kate Bush, The Mission, Lord Byron, John Keats (The Eve of St. Agnes is a particularly favourite poem of mine) and to some extent Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Sex and death are the themes that everyone seems attracted to.A year before I started this work, I read both Dan Brown and Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. These books were certainly an influence on me. Like him I have been fascinated for many years by the rumour or myth that Mary went to France and that Jesus had a descendant. Like him and many others, I speculate that the Cathars did in fact smuggle a great treasure out of Monségur castle, under the noses of the Royalist besiegers. I couldn't resist a climax to my novel that took place in one of the world's greatest Gothic masterpieces. But you will have to read the novel to find out where ...Grab your copy today!

El Borak, otherwise known as Francis Xavier Gordon, is a fictional character created by Robert E. Howard. Gordon was a Texan gunfighter from El Paso who had travelled the world and settled in Afghanistan. He is famous across Asia for his exploits in that continent. The character was originally created when Howard was only ten years old but he did not see print until The Daughter of Erlik Khan in the December 1934 issue of Top-Notch. Borak is Arabic for "The Swift". It is the name given to him in Afghanistan due to his speed and quickness. This is most often represented as his speed in drawing his pistol or attacks with another weapon but can also represent his mental agility as well. Both are the defining traits of the character. This edition contains the five stories of El Borak written by Robert E. Howard and published during his lifetime, including: The Daughter of Erlik Khan Hawk of the Hills Blood of The Gods Son of the White Wolf The Country of The Knife
