    The Units

      Jamie Mackay
     The Units

The Units is a fictional story about a psychology graduate student from Chicago who moves to small town Wainwright to take an internship at Wainwright Mental Institution (WMI). During her time in Wainwright she works at the hospital and, while she falls in love with her romantic interest, she uncovers wrongdoings within the institution.Although all of the events, characters, and places in this book are entirely fictional, the ideas came from more than only the author's imagination. Weyburn Mental Hospital, later called Souris Valley Care Facility, opened in 1921. At the time of its opening, it was considered one of the largest buildings in the British Commonwealth. Sources say that, at its peak, it housed somewhere between 2500 and 3000 patients and was considered to provide the "cutting-edge" of mental health treatment. Historical accounts talk about treatments and experimentation that would be the bane of any current research ethics board. Stories include drug experimentation, "work and water", insulin, LSD, electro-shock, and lobotomy. Other accounts talk of patients who were committed, not because they were mentally ill, but because they simply didn't "fit-in" with the outside world. The most horrifying of stories include incidences of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. After the deinstitutionalization movement in the 1980's, the building was altered to become a long-term care facility and then was eventually demolished in 2009. Before it was demolished, stories of haunting by tortured and abused patients were common. My summers in Weyburn often involved visits to the large, red-bricked, remarkable facility. Although only a child, I was fascinated by the scope and history of the infamous institution and its stately, well-groomed grounds. I would often feel as if I were part of a movie set as I walked down the long lane that led to the extraordinary structure whose circumference was said to be more than a mile. In comparison to its small farm town surroundings, the estate-like property seemed eerie and out of place. As I would walk, I would think about stories told by family members who had been employed in the institution in the days no one likes to talk about. That place and those true stories were only the beginnings of the tales I would one day weave.

The Sword of the Fifth Element

      Peter Harris
The Sword of the Fifth Element

A tale set in ancient Cornwall and the lost world of Aeden, about a man and his wife, and the man's quest for Truth at any cost - and for the Perfect Woman. He finds her, and she teaches him to honour the Goddess in his wife, and to return to her. But she has been taken far away. He must find her and win her back. Only then will they fulfill their remarkable destiny - and at last find true love.A tale set in ancient Cornwall and the lost world of Aeden, about a young swordsmith named Calibur, and his wife, Rosa. It also features a rat, a rose, an anklebiter, a colony of icon-makers, a goatherd, a muse, a monastery, and a goddess.Calibur's troubles all begin one morning at the local market. He is selling swords to make ends meet, as usual, when a stranger's glittering wares catch his eye. He rashly trades all his swords for a little wisdom book - and an icon of a mysterious holy woman of great beauty. Bewitched by the book's promise of ultimate Truth, and maddened by a vision of the woman in the icon, he leaves Rosa to go into the mountains on a quest for Truth at any cost - and for the Perfect Woman of the icon. In the mountains he joins a hermitage, but becomes disillusioned with the ascetic quest for truth. He leaves the hermits to their disputations, and sets out for home. He becomes lost in the wilderness. There he is rescued by the woman of the icon whom he adores, but to his sorrow she commands him to honour the Goddess in his wife, and to return to her. He reluctantly obeys. But she has been taken far away, beyond the borders of the world, by the Boatman of Avalon. He must find the boatman, and prove that he is worthy to be ferried across to that other place. There he must find Rosa and with the help of Ainenia, the mysterious Lady of Aeden, and win her back from a Thorn Convent run by the Aghmaath. These are from the darkened world of Phangkor, and teach the absolute relinquishment of the will to life, and hate and despise the Goddess and love. Only together will Calibur and Rosa fulfill their remarkable destiny back on Earth - and at last find true love. The Icon of Ainenia can be read alone, but it refers to things more fully dealt with in the epic The Apples of Aeden, In the telling of the story of the Icon, it was inevitable that some greater matters should be mentioned, concerning the ancient Order of the Makers and the Nine Worlds. If this becomes a distraction, my apologies in advance; if (as I hope will be the case) you find yourself wishing to know more about Ainenia, Anklebiters, the Aghmaath, Avalon and the whole World of Aeden, there is a remedy: the 'Apples of Aeden' epic, set in the present time and based on the historical source book, 'The Ennead of Aeden', and the Diary of Shelley Arkle. Volume one, The Girl and the Guardian, is now available as an ebook.

    Avenue of Mysteries

      John Irving
     Avenue of Mysteries

ohn Irving returns to the themes that established him as one of North America's most admired and beloved storytellers in this absorbing novel of fate and memory.      As we grow older--most of all, in what we remember and what we dream--we live in the past. Sometimes, we live more vividly in the past than in the present. As an older man, Juan Diego will take a trip to the Philippines, but what travels with him are his dreams and memories; he is most alive in his childhood and early adolescence in Mexico. "An aura of fate had marked him," John Irving writes, of Juan Diego. "The chain of events, the links in our lives--what leads us where we're going, the courses we follow to our ends, what we don't see coming, and what we do--all this can be mysterious, or simply unseen, or even obvious." *Avenue of Mysteries *is the story of what happens to Juan Diego in the Philippines, where what happened to him in the past--in Mexico--collides with his future.

    Specimen Days & Collect

      Walt Whitman
     Specimen Days & Collect

Whitman’s uniquely revealing impressions of the people, places, and events of his time—with a brilliant new introduction by Leslie Jamison, author of the bestselling *The Empathy Exams*. One of the most creative and individual poets America has produced, Walt Whitman was also a prolific diarist, note-taker, and essayist whose intimate observations and reflections have profoundly deepened understanding of nineteenth-century American life. Specimen Days and Collect, first published in 1882, is a choice collection of Whitman’s uniquely revealing impressions of the people, places, and events of his time, principally the era of the Civil War and its aftermath. On page after page, a vast panorama of American life unfolds, and with it rare glimpse of Whitman as poet, empathetic observer, and romantic wanderer. From his years as a wartime nurse in Washington, D.C., come touching glimpses of the dead and dying in military hospitals, memories of Abraham Lincoln, and vivid impressions of the nation’s capital in a time of great crisis. Whitman’s travel yields memorable recollections of Boston, the Hudson Valley, a walk through Central Park, Niagara Falls, the City of Denver, and more. Along with the famed essay “Democratic Vistas,” there are scenes from the poet’s childhood, touching tributes to songbirds, wildflowers, friendship and freedom; impressions of the music of Beethoven, reflections on a last visit to Emerson, the deaths of Lincoln and Longfellow and the painful process of aging. Deeply felt and vividly expressed, Specimen Days and Collect is a richly rewarding experience, a rare excursion into the mind and heard of one of America’s greatest poets—and the America his poetry so richly commemorated. From the Trade Paperback edition.

     Bitter Harvest: A Woman's Fury, a Mother's Sacrifice

On the night of October 23/24, 1995 in Prairie Village, Kansas, a fierce, wind-driven fire devastated the luxurious mansion of Dr. Debora Green and her husband, Dr. Michael Farrar. Trapped and burned to death in the flames were twelve-year-old Tim and his six-year-old sister Kelly. Lissa, ten, was barely able to leap to safety from the garage roof into the arms of her mother, who was standing outside the house. When Michael Farrar returned to the scene, he had lost more than his children and his home. His entire life was in ruins. The fire was the climactic event of Michael and Debora's lives. Until that summer, they seemed to have it all -- a happy marriage, successful medical practices, three bright and beautiful children. Then they went on a trip to Peru with their son. There, they met attractive, blonde Celeste Walker, whose husband, John was also a successful doctor. But after that trip, nothing was the same again for either couple, and all the dark hidden places in Debora and Michael's marriage bubbled to the surface in a series of almost unbelievable horrors.Bitter Harvest is the chronicle of this tragedy in the heartland of America, the true story of the disintegration of a marriage and its horrifying consequences. Rule takes us deep in the psyche of a killer whose behavior was so twisted and so evil that it defies belief. Gripping, powerful, and ultimately terrifying, Bitter Harvest is a vivid recreation of an unthinkable crime -- and a depiction of the unimagined depths of a darkness within the human spirit.Copyright (c) 1998 Ann Rule.
