    A Resignation

      Pete Rizzo
     A Resignation

A short story by a guy who wrote a story about himself trying to write a story.Jessica and her friends Tim, John and Susan were fascinated with the famous Lizzie Borden hatchet murders that took place in 1892 at Fall River, Massachusetts. They would have liked to have met Lizzie in person but she died in 1927 in her hometown Fall River, Massachusetts. Jessica and her friends only lived about fifty miles from the Borden's house but never paid a visit. John had this crazy idea they would all spend the night in the Borden's house and try to conjure up Lizzie Borden's ghost and try to communicate with her and find out the real truth if she really killed her father and step mother. Tim being the rich one of the bunch called the owner on the telephone to see if he and his friends could rent out the Borden's house for the weekend and the owner agreed. The others met Tim at his house and brought along some ghost hunting equipment and a ouija board in hopes of communicating with the ghost of Lizzie Borden. Everyone piled into Tim's Bentley and headed to Fall River, Massachusetts with excitement on their faces. As they were traveling down the highway Susan said “After this is all over and we get concrete proof of the killer's identity I'm going to write a book of our experiences at the Borden's house and I'll bet we'll sell a million copies.” “Dream on girl,” chimed in John laughing under his breath. Jessica said “John lay off, if that's her dream let her have it.” “Okay! Okay!” replied John.

    The Double Tongue

      William Golding
     The Double Tongue

The Double Tongue is William Golding's last and perhaps most superbly imaginative novel. It is a fictional memoir of an aged prophetess at Delphi, the most sacred oracle of ancient Greece, just prior to Greece's domination by the Roman Empire. As a young girl, Arieka is ugly, unconventional, a source of great shame to her uppity parents, who fear they'll never marry her off. But she is saved by Ionides, the High Priest of the Delphic temple, who detects something of a seer (and a friend) in her and whisks her off to the shrine to become the Pythia - the earthly voice of the god Apollo. Arieka has now spent a lifetime at the mercy of a god, a priest, and her devotees, and has witnessed firsthand the decay of Delphi's fortunes and its influence in the world. Her reflections on the mysteries of the oracle, which her own weird gifts embody, are matched by her feminine insight into the human frailties of the High Priest himself, a true Athenian with a wicked sense of humor, whose intriguing against the Romans brings about humiliation and disaster. This extraordinary short novel, left in draft at the author's death in 1993, is a psychological and historical triumph. Golding has created a vivid and comic picture of ancient Greek society as well as an absolutely convincing portrait of a woman's experience, something rare in the Golding oeuvre. Arieka the Pythia is one of his finest creations. Left in draft at the author's death in 1993, this extraordinary short novel is a psychological and historical triumph. An aged prophetess at Delphi, the most sacred oracle in ancient Greece, looks back over her strange life as the Pythia, the voice of the god Apollo. Golding was the author of Lord of the Flies, and a Nobel Laureate.

    Secret Water

      Arthur Ransome
     Secret Water

In the eighth book in Arthur Ransome's beloved Swallows and Amazons series, the five Walker children are left on a "desert island" by their parents with provisions for a long stay and a blank map to fill in. Like all of Ransome's books, this is at once a real adventure and a lesson in the practicalities of exploring - in this case, of surveying the inlets, coves, mudflats, and estuaries of "Walker Island." Naturally, there are enemies to overcome (another clan named "The Eels") and friends to meet (who else but the intrepid "Amazons?"). And, as always, the children do it all solo.
