Combating the Good Combat - How to fight Terrorism with a Peacekeeping Mission

      Rogerio Cietto
Combating the Good Combat - How to fight Terrorism with a Peacekeeping Mission

Despite all the efforts fighting terror, the international community still faces challenges to find terrorists, prevent their attacks, cut their finances and bring their perpetrators to justice. This study shows a new and broad approach to this struggle, based on the legal framework applicable to the situation and the lesson learned, both on the field (tactical) and in headquarters (strategical). This work discusses the new challenge that terrorism imposes on the international community in the Twenty First century, the international actors in position to tackle it, the instruments available to counter them, and the methods to implement them. After a brief description of the three generations of peace operations carried on by the United Nations and other international and regional actors, we will expose the legal framework for international relations concerning the use of force, that are, International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law. Later, we will explain the threat to international peace and security that constitutes terrorism, its forms, methods and motivations, as well as its relations to peacekeeping. After, we will assume that terrorism should be considered a crime under international law, in order to punish their actors effectively. After a brief presentation of the UN System, and its organs related to peacekeeping and terrorism, we will discuss the efforts made so far to combat terror, especially the gathering of intelligence. In the end, we affirm the need to respect International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, and also defend State Sovereignty, to fight terrorism in the long term. This research is based on an extensive research relying on an extended bibliography.

    Report of the County Chairman

      James A. Michener
     Report of the County Chairman

James A. Michener, the acclaimed author of sweeping historical blockbusters, chronicles his personal involvement in one of the most dramatic elections of the twentieth century: the presidential race between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. A relative newcomer to politics, Michener served as the Democratic chairman in his native Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in a rural battleground precinct where the major controversies of the day—notably Kennedy’s Catholicism—brought cultural divides to the forefront. First published shortly after the 1960 election, Report of the County Chairman remains an intimate, gripping account of the power of grassroots political involvement. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for *Report of the County Chairman  * “A candid account of the Kennedy/Nixon campaign.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer  * “Fascinating . . . The personalities are vividly and vigorously sketched—the workers, the volunteers, the hatchet men, the pros and . . . key figures on the barnstorming tour.”—Kirkus Reviews “Instructive . . . Anti-Catholicism was not just a Southern problem. In Pennsylvania, accounts of increasing anti-Catholicism were widespread. No one documented this sentiment more clearly than famed Pennsylvania novelist James Michener.”—The Morning Call* (Allentown, Pennsylvania)

    Sherwood Anderson: Collected Stories

      Sherwood Anderson
     Sherwood Anderson: Collected Stories

In the winter of 1912, Sherwood Anderson (1876–1941) abruptly left his office and spent three days wandering through the Ohio countryside, a victim of “nervous exhaustion.” Over the next few years, abandoning his family and his business, he resolved to become a writer. Novels and poetry followed, but it was with the story collection Winesburg, Ohio that he found his ideal form, remaking the American short story for the modern era. Hart Crane, one of the first to recognize Anderson’s genius, quickly hailed his accomplishment: “America should read this book on her knees.” Here––for the first time in a single volume––are all the collections Anderson published during his lifetime: Winesburg, Ohio (1919), The Triumph of the Egg (1921), Horses and Men (1923), and Death in the Woods (1933), along with a generous selection of stories left uncollected or unpublished at his death. Exploring the hidden recesses of small town life, these haunting, understated, often sexually frank stories pivot on seemingly quiet moments when lives change, futures are recast, and pasts come to reckon. They transformed the tone of American storytelling, inspiring writers like Hemingway, Faulkner, and Mailer, and defining a tradition of midwestern fiction that includes Charles Baxter, editor of this volume.
