    First Steps (A Short Story)

      Brian Hartman
     First Steps (A Short Story)

'"First Steps" is the story of Dave Riggler's first psychotherapy session. He's a handicapped teenager, who uses a wheelchair, in therapy (he thinks) because the school he's going to wants him to walk on a walker, but he doesn't want to. "First Steps" is a story about being handicapped, identity, and self-determination, for better or worse. This short story series concludes with 'New Roads'. The series follows two retirees, widowers, and former next door neighbors, as they close the doors on their previous long term marriages and seek in each other a loving partner to share the remainder of their life with. Their dramas are not unlike what many face, but it is their joy of life and appreciation of each other that lights their way through the dark times as well as the stormy times.

Both dark and light in feeling these works offer a range of feelings emotions and experiences.I call my writing Splatter. Some of the writing is about me while some pieces are observational but in the first person. The words, phrases, paragraphs, and poems come to me in bursts. And are usually created in under 15 minutes. I make no claim of quality. I write what I think and do not censor nor edit. Like Jackson Pollack, and his paintings, my work goes places that are not always obvious, even to me. They are rough and at times profane, but words though haphazard are chosen carefully. There are purposely no titles to any of the pieces. A title suggests a mood or an explanation. I offer neither. Each piece was arbitrarily placed in the collection. No attempt was made to group the pieces by mood or feeling. The chapters are broken only into prose and poems J.L Wolf

    One Hundred Poems, Volume I

      Tuomas Vainio
     One Hundred Poems, Volume I

What you get is a hundred short poems of varying lengths and topics. Most of which rhyme and all which are free for you to browse and read.A hundred days ago I set myself to a task of writing a single poem once a day and this is the result. A hundred short poems of varying length in the amount of lines and width in the number of words. There is no overall theme to this collection as each poem was written separately from the latter. Thus you can feel free to read them in whichever order you wish, and it should not affect the over all experience. But I suppose you are still curious of what you are about to leap into. Thus a brief summary of the poems would be; depression, love, popular culture, politics and regret. My personal favourite is the one called "Fishfingers" that also happens to be the shortest by my estimate. So go ahead and read.

Late at night or at dawn, when dreams are shattered, there is someone who opens his eyes and he restless moves his sweaty head in the pillow. It is as if a sword hurt him by treachery and blood gets coagulating immediately, leaving a permanent scar in the mind of the man for all the days to come.“For a week I did not dream anymore, but every holy morning just opening my eyes I'm relive theLate at night or at dawn, when dreams are shattered, there is someone who opens his eyes and he restless moves his sweaty head in the pillow. It is as if a sword hurt him by treachery and blood gets coagulating immediately, leaving a permanent scar in the mind of the man for all the days to come.“For a week I did not dream anymore, but every holy morning just opening my eyes I'm relive the same scene of that my last nightmare - my sister Miyabi had disappeared after one of the many fights with my father. I'm running out of the house on the street in an undershirt and panties, it was pitch dark, after a few hundred meters I stopped next to a lamppost. I had shortness of breath, I looked around in search of Miyabi, but there was none, only papers, cans and other trash. I looked down and saw my feet bare and bleeding, I started to feel pain, I raised her right foot and saw that, embedded in the sole of the foot for two or three millimetres, there was the needle of a syringe, someone had thrown it to the ground after being injected with the drug. I grabbed it and pulled out slowly, while blood flowed along the outer edge of the needle into the hand. The left foot was bleeding, I was relieved and pasted like a shard of glass still attached with a piece of etiquette, it was the shard of a bottle of beer, not surprisingly was the favourite brand by Miyabi . When I lowered my eyes, I had both feet in a pool of blood and then I passed out.“

A House Not Meant to Stand

      Tennessee Williams
A House Not Meant to Stand

Christmas 1982: Cornelius and Bella McCorkle of Pascagoula, Mississippi, return home one midnight in a thunderstorm from the Memphis funeral of their older son to a house and a life literally falling apart--daughter Joanie is in an insane asylum and their younger son Charlie is upstairs having sex with his pregnant, holy-roller girlfriend as the McCorkles enter. Cornelius, who has political ambitions and a litany of health problems, is trying to find a large amount of moonshine money his gentle wife Bella has hidden somewhere in their collapsing house, but his noisy efforts are disrupted by a stream of remarkable characters, both living and dead. While Williams often used drama to convey hope and desperation in human hearts, it was through this dark, expressionistic comedy, which he called a "Southern gothic spook sonata," that he was best able to chronicle his vision of the fragile state of our world.
