Winter Journal

      Paul Auster
     Winter Journal

On January 3, 2011, exactly one month before his sixty-fourth birthday, Paul Auster sat down and wrote the first entry of Winter Journal, his unorthodox, beautifully wrought examination of his own life, as seen through the history of his body. Composed in the manner of a musical fugue, the journal advances from one autobiographical fragment to the next, jumping backward and forward in time as the various themes intersect, bounce off one another, and ultimately merge in a great chorus of multiple voices, of one voice multiplied into many. Writing in the second person, as if addressing himself as a stranger, which at the same time establishes an uncanny intimacy with the reader, Auster takes us from childhood to the brink of old age as he summons forth a universe of physical sensation, of pleasures and pains, moving from the awakening sexual desire as an adolescent to the ever deepening bonds of married love, from the shocks of violent accidents to an account of his mother's sudden death in 2002, from meditations on eating and sleeping to the "scalding, epiphanic moment of clarity" in 1978 that set him on a new course as a writer. Thirty years after the publication of The Invention of Solitude, his first book of prose, Paul Auster has now given us a second memoir of uncommon power and grace. Winter Journal is a book that looks straight into the heart of what it means to be alive.

    Vital Parts: A Novel

      Thomas Berger
     Vital Parts: A Novel

A bitterly comic novel of middle-aged angst and middle-class American life in the 1960s, by the acclaimed author of *Little Big Man* It is the late sixties in suburbia, and Carlo Reinhart’s life is a mess. He’s fat, broke, middle aged, and unemployed. His anarchist son hates him, and his wife has taken a younger lover and thrown Carlo out of the house. In fact, the only one who doesn’t consider him contemptible and ridiculous seems to be Carlo’s adoring, overweight daughter, who is almost as pathetic as he is. Even his affair with a twenty-two-year-old nymphomaniac is strangely unsatisfying. Then, just as he’s reaching his lowest point, the self-styled Ultimate Human Irrelevancy is offered a golden opportunity to grab a piece of the American Dream, thanks to the reappearance of his old school chum Bob Sweet. Bob, who has a gift for success, is inviting Reinhart to get in on the ground floor of his latest venture: cryonics. But while Carlo loves the taste of the good life that his friend has suddenly provided, he’s not quite certain whether Sweet wants him as a partner . . . or as a human popsicle. The third novel in Thomas Berger’s acclaimed Carlo Reinhart Series, Vital Parts is a stingingly hilarious swipe at twentieth-century culture and mores. Unrestrained and unapologetic, it is a tour de force from a master satirist that stands alongside Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy of Dunces, and the novels of Kurt Vonnegut as a trenchant and funny comment on American life.

    Laconic Lyrics

      A Naturalbeing
     Laconic Lyrics

This is a poem book, with themes ranging from drugs, to climate change, to the struggle to escape the class warfare that society induces. What will you do when the creepers come?Summer is coming! Things are beginning to thaw in the ice cube field to the north. When a villager of the Snow-Block-Wall deserts, Nerderd Spark must intervene. The villager warns of creepers coming to life as the world becomes warmer. Nerderd calls it madness and sends the villager back to the wall to stand vigil.Meanwhile, Nerderd’s sons have found a modified pair of wolves that continue to produce one wolf for each Spark child. He fears having to explain why he has brought six wolves home to his wife, but she has news of her own -- the Arm of the King, her brother-in-law has died under suspicious circumstances in King’s Squatting.Far to the south of Nerderd’s holdfast, the daughter of the old king will not wed her barbaric suitor. She will make up her own mind about whom to marry, thank you very much, and her brother will just have to learn to live with the consequences.//Note to parents. This is a mild-mannered parody. It contains nothing inappropriate. We encourage parents to read this and all books to know what your child is reading. The scariest thing it contains are creepers, although come to think about it, creepers are pretty darn scary. It is recommended for ages 9 and up.//

    The Journey to the East

      Hermann Hesse
     The Journey to the East

In simple, mesmerizing prose, Hermann Hesse's *Journey to the East* tells of a journey both geographic and spiritual. H.H., a German choirmaster, is invited on an expedition with the League, a secret society whose members include Paul Klee, Mozart, and Albertus Magnus. The participants traverse both space and time, encountering Noah's Ark in Zurich and Don Quixote at Bremgarten. The pilgrims' ultimate destination is the East, the "Home of the Light," where they expect to find spiritual renewal. Yet the harmony that ruled at the outset of the trip soon degenerates into open conflict. Each traveler finds the rest of the group intolerable and heads off in his own direction, with H.H. bitterly blaming the others for the failure of the journey. It is only long after the trip, while poring over records in the League archives, that H.H. discovers his own role in the dissolution of the group, and the ominous significance of the journey itself.
