    Catfish Volumes 36-40

      Andrew Bushard
     Catfish Volumes 36-40

This anthology contains volumes 36-40 of my zine of book, audio, and other reviews.Commentary by Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana MaharajaEdited by Vicitri dasiSri Gita-govinda is the zenith of all literatures; the poet himself confidently tells his audience this fact at the beginning as well as at the end of his divine masterpiece. This great classic is an immaculate presentation of sacred amorous love, manifested in this world by a genuine Vrajavasi, a resident of the topmost spiritual realm. It was by the desire of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu that this intimate vision of madhura-rasa was revealed in this world, providing a means for Him to relish the moods of Sri Radha. It furthermore affords a view of the unimaginable, confidential reality of Goloka Vraja for the conditioned souls of Kali-yuga. This Gita-govinda and other Gosvami literatures, with their pristine descriptions of the erotic mellow, are indeed the very medicine to alleviate our had-roga, the disease of lust contaminating our hearts. Throughout his epic masterpiece, in the eighth verse of many of the anoapadis, Sri Jayadeva assures us that his words are just the remedy to counteract the foulness of Kali. Sri Gita-govinda is celebrated in the educated society as an exquisite poetic composition that exemplifies the amorous mellow, saigara-rasa. Its author, the revered Sri Jayadeva Gosvami, is also widely accepted as an exceptionally talented poet. However, Sri Gita-govinda is not merely a world-famous poem full of emotive literary ornaments arranged in proper meter. Furthermore, Jayadeva Gosvami is not merely a poet adept in tasteful expressions through the development of his innate abilities. Sri Gita-govinda is the very essence of all the Vedas and Sri Jayadeva Gosvami is the highest class of devotional practitioner and perfected spiritualist, with complete mastery of all Vedic wisdom.

The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction

      Dorothy Scarborough
The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction

PREFACE THE subject of the supernatural in modern English fiction has been found difficult to deal with because of its wealth of material. While there has been no previous book on the topic, and none related to it, save Mr. C. E. Whitmore’s work on The Supernatural in Tragedy, the mass of fiction itself introducing ghostly or psychic motifs is simply enormous. It is manifestly impossible to discuss, or even to mention, all of it. Even in my bibliography which numbers over three thousand titles, I have made no effort to list all the available examples of the type. The bibliography, which I at first intended to publish in connection with this volume, is far too voluminous to be included here, so will probably be brought out later by itself. It would have been impossible for me to prosecute the research work or to write the book save for the assistance generously given by many persons. I am indebted to the various officials of the libraries of Columbia University and of New York City, particularly to Miss Isadore Mudge, Reference Librarian of Columbia, and to the authorities of the New York Society Library for permission to use their priceless out-of-print novels in the Kennedy Collection. My interest in English fiction was increased during my attendance on some courses in the history of the English novel, given by Dr. A. J. Carlyle, in Oxford University, England, several years ago. I have received helpful bibliographical suggestions from Professor Blanche Colton Williams, Dr. Dorothy Brewster, Professor Nelson Glenn McCrea, Professor John Cunliffe, and Dean Talcott Williams, of Columbia, and Professor G. L. Kittredge, of Harvard. Professors William P. Trent, George Philip Krapp, and Ernest Hunter Wright very kindly read the book in manuscript and gave valuable advice concerning it, Professor Wright going over the material with me in detail. But my chief debt of gratitude is to Professor Ashley H. Thorndike, Head of the Department of English and Comparative Literature in Columbia, whose stimulating criticism and kindly encouragement have made the book possible. To all of these—and others—who have aided me, I am deeply grateful, and I only wish that the published volume were more worthy of their assistance. D. S. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, April, 1917.

The Old Silk Hat, A Frosty The Snowman Prequel

      P. Edward Auman
The Old Silk Hat, A Frosty The Snowman Prequel

This is a short story from author P. Edward Auman about the origin of Frosty's old silk hat and has been dedicated to Emilie Parker and the other nineteen children of the Sandy Hook Elementary, Conn. tragedy. This story is a heart felt explanation of how the old silk hat gained its magical properties through the experiences of love. It may be shared with your children and loved ones. The Old Silk Hat placed upon Frosty's head is immortalized in story and song. But this short story details the history behind the silk hat and how it came to be infused with life-producing magic. Follow the progression and the changing of owners of the silk hat as it factors into the lives of several men during their lives and relationships before granting Frosty life. The story can be considered general audience and is a heart-felt tribute to the children of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy on December 14th, 2012. It was written in direct response to the tragedy and home coming of Emilie Parker to Ogden, UT for her funeral, as author P. Edward Auman contemplated how best to honor the children and bring comfort to their family and friends as well as his own. Several books were nearing prepartion for publication in 2013 as the author had not previously published any of his works he has written in the last twenty-five years. But none of them captured the essence of why our children's lives touch each of us so strongly. Ideally, the story may be read with your children in about thirty to forty minutes, and may best be used during the Christmas Holidays. However, it is written in such a manner that it may appeal to all denominations and faiths as well. It is the one story that brought the author to tears even during the course of writing it.
