Lines from a Gum Tree Grove

      Richard George
Lines from a Gum Tree Grove

This book contains fifty-six quatorzains (fourteen line poems) celebrating moments in a romance that played out in Eastern Colorado and Northern California. The three full color comics in Volume 7 are phonics based. They contain simple short vowel words, short vowel words with double final 'l' or 's,' or initial and final consonant blends. This gives the beginning reader an opportunity to read slightly more challenging words while still having the support of the comic illustrations. The characters act out their stories in a gentle and humorous way. Whether Jill is pouring her water bottle on her dog's head to cool him off, or Ted is falling in a fountain, the stories engage the reader. I hope your beginning reader will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Even if you live in the North Pole with Santa, it doesn't guarantee you'll love Christmas. Just ask Snowbella. She despises everything about the season--the too tasty candy canes, the wily elves, the mouthy reindeer, the stinky smell of pine trees and so on and on. Then one impossible night, her closed heart is forced open by the deep meaning of Christmas. Funny, quirky, and eye-opening--this tale is full of laughter as well as tears.     My Songwriting Process

      Mike Diehm
     My Songwriting Process

In which I attempt to describe the way a song comes to me. I also discuss working with other songwriters. Their work also appears in this essay.I was asked by DW Gregory, an award-winning playwrite form the D.C. area, to write this essay. She explores the writing process on her blog. You can find her at www.dwgregory.com. Be sure to check out "Looking Backwards Through A Microscope" while you're there. When she asked me to write this I was a bit concerned because although I've thought about my songwriting and how it comes about, I'd never tried to put it into words. But it came rather easily. So it is because of DW that you are reading this!

    Searching for Schindler

      Thomas Keneally
     Searching for Schindler

This is the captivating story behind Schindler’s List, the Booker Prize–winning book and the Academy Award–winning Spielberg film. Keneally tells the tale of the unlikely encounter that propelled him to write about Oskar Schindler and of the impact of his extraordinary account on people around the world. Thomas Keneally met Leopold “Poldek” Pfefferberg, the owner of a Beverly Hills luggage shop, in 1981. Poldek, a Polish Jew and a Holocaust survivor, had a tale he wanted the world to know. Charming, charismatic, and persistent, he convinced Keneally to relate the incredible story of “the all-drinking, all-screwing, all-black-marketeering Nazi, Oskar Schindler. But to me he was Jesus Christ.” Searching for Schindler is the engrossing chronicle of Keneally’s pursuit of one of history’s most fascinating and paradoxical heroes. Traveling throughout the United States, Germany, Israel, Poland, and Austria, Keneally and Poldek interviewed people who had known Schindler and uncovered their indelible memories of the Holocaust. Keneally’s powerful narrative rose quickly to the top of bestseller lists. Steven Spielberg’s magnificent film adaptation went on to fulfill Poldek’s dream of winning “an Oscar for Oskar.” (Keneally’s anecdotes about Spielberg, Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and other cast members will delight film buffs.) Written with candor and humor, Seaching for Schindler is an intimate look at Keneally’s growth as a writer and the enormous success of his portrait of Oskar Schindler.
