    One Hundred Poems, Volume IV

      Tuomas Vainio
     One Hundred Poems, Volume IV

Contemporary poetry inspired by and about popular culture. From food to controversial issues. Each poem is about 100 words on average. The fourth volume out of ten planned.I set myself the goal of writing 1000 poems, about one per day, and this is my fourth volume towards that specific goal. This collection is by no means an autobiographical diary with any quantity of accuracy, but I cannot deny how these poems wouldn’t have a specific reason why it particularly was written on that very day.The topics I handle can be summed up as popular culture, events, politics, memes, and even controversial issues with controversial stance. Hence the poem tittles may seem spot on or even entirely misleading. Anyhow, this volume contains the following poems:'Festival of Dangerous Idea(logue)s'The Shepherd's CrownYi-Fen Chou'Free Speech Fundamentalist'On That Third Party TrollDammit honeyThe obscurity of self publishingThat Skull of MineLiving in denial#PC PrincipalThe Three Stories Before MeBeetroot HamburgerBaby PenguinsJob Interviews: Awkward Flirtations of DenialA book that remains unfinished#ShoutYourAbortion?'S' On My Forehead (For a Superhero Novel?)Nigga Fried Chicken (NFC)“Cyber VAWG?”Kollektivet Music Video: 'Kygo's Confession'Feminists and Sex RobotsAccusation: Rape ApologistFinland's 'Ruined' ReputationTrains and SnowMustardWords Have MeaningAftermath of a ShootingThat No Man's Sky (For science fiction novel)The Amber Rose Slut WalkThe First Day of AutumnThe life as it is#NationalPoetryDayThe perks of being an art teacherThe MartianA Queen's Buttock (For a fantasy novel)Comment SectionsMy role in #GamerGate?Death of a ComputerUN picks fight with gamers?Jar or PicklesThe news of todayA poem a dayBattle of Ideas#CocksNotGlocks? The Canadian Prime Minister'Mean'Kiss of a Rose (For a fantasy novel)Trailer: Star Wars – The Force Awakens#SavePointSchool Attack in TrollhättanNo poem todayPrioritiesOnline Fish BaitAn update on #SavePointLardship TroopersHello (For A Science Fiction Novel)Paedophilia#SavePoint is back, sort of?#OpForgiveWhen the word 'too' is too 'sexist'Jessica Jones – Purple ManSupergirlI do not feel like thinkingAnd something slightly more joyousPeople Online“#GamerGate movie”Super Cheese Bacon HamburgerA poem in ten in minutes“69”Orcas in Plastic BagsUnbearable HoneyPeach Flavoured Ice TeaAftermath of Paris#SavePoint, A Full CircleOf boxes of chocolates and jars of jalapeñosFallout 4, an author's baneSköll (For a Fantasy Novel)#IStandWithStarkeyWhere are you dogmeat? When snow and rain fall#Freedom of TweetsFeminists and Daleks, kindred spiritsYar-harDead or Alive, a volleyball gameTwenty-eight wordsAt the 'end' of Fallout 4 (Spoilers, duh.)Just DanceFallout 4 - Road GogglesShe cannot ride a bicycleRealistic Fish Pencil CaseMidnight Cleaning“On the right side of history”Twitter's CensorshipSay it againLove of All ThingsDie Clara Die, on Doctor WhoThe Modern News of the Political LeftDecember RainsThat Malaysian Prime MinisterAnd a fourth hundred

    Ill Seen Ill Said

      Samuel Beckett
     Ill Seen Ill Said

This late work from Samuel Beckett is the haunting picture of an old woman alone in a cabin, who watches the evening and the morning star and ventures out chiefly to visit a grave. In prose of great poetic beauty, which the author translated from his original French text Mal vu mal dit in 1982, Beckett returns to the imagery of the Old and New Testaments to speculate on the great questions of human existence. One of the great writers of the 20th century, Beckett won the Nobel Prize in 1969. He is remembered primarily as a novelist and playwright, producing Waiting for Godot and the trilogy Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnameable, though he was also a poet and, when he chose to be, a discerning critic of great originality. Beckett continues to exert a powerful influence on other writers and interest in his work has grown since his death in 1989.

    Straight Man

      Richard Russo
     Straight Man

William Henry Devereaux, Jr., spiritually suited to playing left field but forced by a bad hamstring to try first base, is the unlikely chairman of the English department at West Central Pennsylvania University. Over the course of a single convoluted week, he threatens to execute a duck, has his nose slashed by a feminist poet, discovers that his secretary writes better fiction than he does, suspects his wife of having an affair with his dean, and finally confronts his philandering elderly father, the one-time king of American Literary Theory, at an abandoned amusement park. Such is the canvas of Richard Russo's Straight Man, a novel of surpassing wit, poignancy, and insight. As he established in his previous books -- Mohawk, The Risk Pool, and Nobody's Fool -- Russo is unique among contemporary authors for his ability to flawlessly capture the soul of the wise guy and the heart of a difficult parent. In Hank Devereaux, Russo has created a hero whose humor and identification with the absurd are mitigated only by his love for his family, friends, and, ultimately, knowledge itself. Unforgettable, compassionate, and laugh-out-loud funny, Straight Man cements Richard Russo's reputation as one of the master storytellers of our time. From the Hardcover edition.

The Black Arrow: A Tale of Two Roses

      Robert Louis Stevenson
The Black Arrow: A Tale of Two Roses

“The Black Arrow” is what every book about the Middle Ages should be and more, with suspense, action, disguises, escapes, and of course, the occasional love scene. Robert Louis Stevenson lived in the mid-1800s, and is renowned for his many works, including Treasure Island, Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Kidnapped. The Black Arrow, written originally for a magazine, was written after Stevenson’s recovery from a serious illness and published right after Treasure Island. Dick Shelton, a boy of sixteen, is quickly thrust into the conflict of the War of the Roses. He battles against almost any kind of evil - bloodthirsty pirates, a murderous priest, and even his own legal guardian - Sir Daniel Brackley. Through the whole book Dick strives to become a knight and rescue his true love. Although most likely the least known of Stevenson’s great adventure novels, “The Black Arrow” is the best in the eyes of many.

    Rare Pets and Other Oddities

      Dave Leys
     Rare Pets and Other Oddities

Humourous stories with a twist in the end of each tale. How a witch loses her powers and defeats her witch friends with kindness, how a rich man sells his spoiled children as pets, how a father forces his children to play backyard cricket through a bushfire and saves the day, how a newspaper boy lies to get the girl but comes undone ... and more.Rare Pets and other Oddities is a collection of stories characterised by black humour with a twist in the end of the tale. A witch loses her powers and defeats her witch friends with kindness. A rich man sells his spoiled children as pets. A father forces his children to play backyard cricket through a bushfire and saves the day. A newspaper boy lies to get the girl and is defeated through his own mendacity. Two girls try to compel adults to be happy, only to achieve their purpose when they give up. Parents try to cure their son of his medieval obsession through unorthodox means. A golfer who teases bald men has the tables turned on him. A young girl invents a fake boyfriend to turn her older sister off love, only to fall in love herself. Young neighbours compete with escalating pool parties, only to learn popularity isn’t everything. A young boy absorbs curiosity about the universe through his sister’s birthday present – the astronomical refractor. Two scientists fake a new species and are shamed on national television. A father tries to scare his sons to sleep only to be shot with a tranquilizerThese stories have the moral wisdom of Aesop, the absurdity of Roald Dahl and David Walliams and the larrikinism of Andy Griffiths. Children know the world can be both cruel and generous and these stories reflect that. They are ethical but never didactic. Their primary effect is simple – entertainment. The collection is aimed at upper primary school boys and girls. Adults read them and laugh, and yet the story is never ‘winking’ above the children’s heads to their parents or teachers with separate jokes … the humour, quirky as it is, comes from irony, from the recognition of universal human types and frailties.

     Vengeance & Remission

It is a story about a Roman soldier, Marcus Lucius, son of the great warrior Maximus, who protects his friends (Appius, Octavian) and falls in love in Julia Fabia, while he is on the way to revenge his killed wife, Decima. It's a story with many risky actions, intrigues and it's about friendship, loyalty and of course love. There was a lot of action, mysteries and intrigues. I loved it. I was like the BBC series about the emperor Claudius. I think everybody would be pleased to see it as a movie (like Gladiator with Russel Crowe) or a series. It’s very good written, fluently and lyrically. I loved the battle scene. It was impressive! It sounded like music! Like a symphony! Awesome! There is a lot of historical background, but it’s not depressing.

    Point of a Pencil

     Point of a Pencil

Do we really need to buy twenty-four pencils? a student asked. -No, not just twenty-four pencils, but rather twenty-four sharpened pencils, the lecturer replied.Point of a pencil, is a short story about a creative writing class, in which the lecturer tells the students that she requires each of them to arrive at the class with twenty-four sharpened pencils. The students question this number, but soon the point she made is brought home to the class, when those students that did not follow her instruction begin to run out of ink, break the point of the only pencil they've brought with them, or lose the lead out of their clutch pencils. Its just a short story about how a lecturer can inspire a class to write more interestingly and use their imaginations.
