Foul Ball

      Jim Bouton
     Foul Ball

In his first diary since Ball Four, Jim Bouton recounts his amazing adventure trying to save a historic ballpark in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Host to organized baseball since 1892, Wahconah Park was soon to be abandoned by the owner of the Pittsfield Mets, who would move his team to a new stadium in another town—an all too familiar story.Enter Bouton and his partner with the best deal ever offered to a community—a locally owned professional baseball team and a privately restored city-owned ballpark at no cost to the taxpayers. The only people who didn't like Bouton's plan were the Mayor, the Mayor's hand-picked Parks Commissioners, a majority of the City Council, the only daily newspaper, the city's largest bank, it's most powerful law firm, and a guy from General Electric. Everyone else—or approximately 98% of the citizens of Pittsfield—loved it.The "good old boys" hated Bouton's plan because it would put a stake in the heart of a...

    The Watchman

      Robert Crais
     The Watchman

To pay back an old debt, Pike is coerced into protecting Larkin Barkley, a hard-partying young heiress whose life is in danger after a "wrong place wrong time" encounter that quickly escalates and spins out of control. The enemy is shadowy, violent and relentless—but the fierce, focused Pike, one of the strongest characters in modern crime fiction, is equal to the challenge. The breathless pace and rich styling are sure to appeal to readers of hard-boiled fiction in general, but since up to now Pike has mostly remained in the background, some fans of the Elvis Cole series (The Forgotten Man, etc.) may find the explicit picture that emerges of Pike at odds with the image they've constructed for themselves.

    The Dust of Conflict

      Harold Bindloss
     The Dust of Conflict

Harold Edward Bindloss (1866 - December 30, 1945) was an English novelist who wrote many adventure novels set in western Canada. Bindloss was born in Liverpool in 1866. According to his New York Times obituary: Mr Bindloss was more than 30 years old before he began writing. Previously he had roamed the world, farming in Canada and working in southern climes as a cargo heaver, a planter, and at other jobs. Broken by malaria he returned to England forty-five years ago and took up office work. But he lost his job when his health broke down and turned to writing in which he found his true vocation. He published some forty novels between the years 1902 and 1943. Many of his books had their locale in Canada. He returned to London. In 1898, he published his first book, a non-fiction account based on his travels in Africa, called In the Niger Country. This was followed by dozens of novels. He was a popular writer. One reviewer writes: A new book by Harold Bindloss is always welcome. He tells a story well indeed, but one likes his books best perhaps for the environment which he knows so well how to sketch. He has written charming stories of the Canadian Northwest and one remembers with pleasure his novels “Prescott of Saskatchewan” and “Winston of the Prairie”. The town of Bindloss, in the Canadian province of Alberta, was named after him. Bindloss died in Carlisle, England.
