Tenth of December: Stories

      George Saunders
     Tenth of December: Stories

One of the most important and blazingly original writers of his generation, George Saunders is an undisputed master of the short story, and Tenth of December is his most honest, accessible, and moving collection yet. In the taut opener, “Victory Lap,” a boy witnesses the attempted abduction of the girl next door and is faced with a harrowing choice: Does he ignore what he sees, or override years of smothering advice from his parents and act? In “Home,” a combat-damaged soldier moves back in with his mother and struggles to reconcile the world he left with the one to which he has returned. And in the title story, a stunning meditation on imagination, memory, and loss, a middle-aged cancer patient walks into the woods to commit suicide, only to encounter a troubled young boy who, over the course of a fateful morning, gives the dying man a final chance to recall who he really is. A hapless, deluded owner of an antiques store; two mothers struggling to do the right thing; a teenage girl whose idealism is challenged by a brutal brush with reality; a man tormented by a series of pharmaceutical experiments that force him to lust, to love, to kill—the unforgettable characters that populate the pages of Tenth of December are vividly and lovingly infused with Saunders’s signature blend of exuberant prose, deep humanity, and stylistic innovation. Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into the questions of what makes us good and what makes us human. Unsettling, insightful, and hilarious, the stories in Tenth of December—through their manic energy, their focus on what is redeemable in human beings, and their generosity of spirit—not only entertain and delight; they fulfill Chekhov’s dictum that art should “prepare us for tenderness.” Advance praise for *Tenth of December “Tenth of December shows George Saunders at his most subversive, hilarious, and emotionally piercing. Few writers can encompass that range of adjectives, but Saunders is a true original—restlessly inventive, yet deeply humane.”—Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of A Visit from the Goon Squad “George Saunders is a complete original, unlike anyone else, thank god—and yet still he manages to be the rightful heir to three other complete American originals—Barthelme (the lyricism, the playfulness), Vonnegut (the outrage, the wit, the scope), and Twain (the common sense, the exasperation). There is no author I recommend to people more often—for ten years I’ve urged George Saunders onto everyone and everyone. You want funny? Saunders is your man. You want emotional heft? Saunders again. You want stories that are actually about something—stories that again and again get to the meat of matters of life and death and justice and country? Saunders. There is no one better, no one more essential to our national sense of self and sanity.”—Dave Eggers, author of A Hologram for the King* From the Hardcover edition.

Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, tells a powerful tale of poverty and undying hope in his moving novel No One Writes to the Colonel. 'The Colonel took the top off the coffee can and saw that there was only one spoonful left' Fridays are different. Every other day of the week, the Colonel and his ailing wife fight a constant battle against poverty and monotony, scraping together the dregs of their savings for the food and medicine that keeps them alive. But on Fridays the postman comes - and that sets a fleeting wave of hope rushing through the Colonel's ageing heart. For fifteen years he's watched the mail launch come into harbour, hoping he'll be handed an envelope containing the army pension promised to him all those years ago. Whilst he waits for the cheque, his hopes are pinned on his prize bird and the upcoming cockfighting season. But until then the bird - like the Colonel and his wife - must somehow be fed. . .      Heated

***NEW YORK TIMES* BESTSELLER For fans of* Fifty Shades of Grey, Bared to You,* and *Release Me* comes an all-new erotic series of three enigmatic and powerful men, and the striking women who can bring them to their knees.** ** ** *I knew better than to risk my heart.* *But fierce passion comes at a high price.* I grew up believing in right and wrong, good and evil, black and white. I knew better than to trust. And then I met Tyler Sharp. Bold, charming, and dangerously sexy, Tyler always gets what he wants. But his smile can be deceiving, his dealings sordid, his ambitions ruthless. I thought I was the one woman strong enough to resist him, but our need for each other was too urgent to deny. One look and I was in trouble. One touch and I was hooked. One night and I became his. And now that I’ve fallen, there’s no going back. ***Heated *is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences. ** *FIRST TIME IN PRINT: THE BONUS STORY “TAKE ME” * **Praise for *Heated*** ** * * ** “A steamy story with a dark edge. Recommended for those seeking crime drama with spice.”**—*Library Journal*** * * “Kenner may very well have cornered the market on sinfully attractive, dominant antiheroes and the women who swoon for them, and this second installment of her Most Wanted series goes a long way toward solidifying that claim. Her characters’ scorching, scandalous affair explores the very nature of attraction and desire, redeeming and changing them beyond measure. . . . Fans will no doubt love the games of power, overwhelming passion and self-defining relationship that Kenner has crafted, and come away eager for more.”**—*RT Book Reviews*** ** * * ** “Fans of erotic romance will enjoy *Heated*. The plot is complex, the characters engaging, and J. Kenner’s passionate writing brings it all perfectly together.”**—Harlequin Junkie** ** ** “In Julie Kenner’s typical masterful storytelling, nothing is as it seems. We are taken deeply into the plot twists and the danger of this erotic journey. The chemistry first felt by both Tyler and Sloanne during their first encounter roars into an all-consuming fire neither one can put out. . . . Take the same journey I did and you will not be disappointed!”**—As You Wish Reviews**

    Down & Dirty

      Tracy Wolff
     Down & Dirty

This hard-bodied football star is used to scoring. But he needs all the right moves to get past a fiery redhead’s defenses in a steamy standalone novel from the bestselling author of Ruined. Emerson: Talk about bad first impressions. I have too much riding on this job to show up late on my first day looking like the winner of a wet T-shirt contest, all thanks to an arrogant quarterback who drives like he owns the road. Hunter Browning thinks that because he’s famous, he can fix everything with a smile and a wave of his hand. He’s too bronzed, buff, and beautiful for his own good. Or mine. I can’t let on that I’m a fan . . . no matter how much fun we’d have in the sack. Hunter: Hitting that puddle was my best play since winning the Super Bowl with a touchdown pass. Sure, it’s not my preferred way to get a girl wet, but I’ll make an exception for Emerson Day. She’s got a sharp tongue and a red-hot temper, even with her soaking clothes plastered to her every curve. Now I know exactly what my next play will be: hire Emerson as my personal real-estate agent, save her job—and see if I can take her off the market. Look for Tracy Wolff’s seductive Ethan Frost series: RUINED | ADDICTED | EXPOSED | FLAWED Praise for *Down & Dirty* “I’m obsessed with Tracy Wolff’s writing style. She’s hilarious, magical, and beyond talented! Down & Dirty was hot and explosive!”—Sarah Robinson, author of the Kavanagh Legends series “Down & Dirty is an entertaining and steamy sports romance. Tracy Wolff created really good relationships and interactions between all of the characters with plenty of banter and teasing. Ms. Wolff created a great cast of characters in their friends and family whom I would love to see as main characters in future books, especially Hunter’s teammates.”—Harlequin Junkie “I’ve never read anything by Tracy Wolff but after the first chapter of this book . . . I’m a lifelong fan. Dude. Within a few paragraphs, I laughed and cringed and got irritated and swoony . . . it . . . was . . . awesome!!”—Little Miss Bookmark (five stars) “5 reasons to read Down & Dirty: 1 - It features football. Everyone knows I’m a sucker for football players. 2 - The characters. Both have some pretty intense things they are fighting, and it makes them stronger people. 3 - A few pretty funny moments. I mean, there were times I was laughing out loud, literally. 4 - Sexy scenes. There are a few, and they are hot. 5 - Emotional. I didn’t know going in that this book would tug at my heartstrings, but it did. It’s so much more than a romance.”—Bookish Things & More “I definitely loved this book. A great football romance with a heartwarming yet heartbreaking story.”—BookSmacked (five stars) “Touch Down! Another winner for Tracy Wolff! . . . I may have discovered this author by accident, but I'm smart enough to not let her get away now that I've found her.”—iScream Books Blog (five stars) “This is a beautiful story about love, loss, dealing with the curveballs life sends you and how having someone beside you can help you deal with anything.

Now he brings us the long-awaited follow-up to The Notebook-a story of an ordinary man who goes to extraordinary lengths to win back the love of his life... After thirty years, Wilson Lewis is forced to face a painful truth: the romance has gone out of his marriage. His wife, Jane, has fallen out of love with him, and it is entirely his fault. Despite the shining example of his in-laws, Noah and Allie Calhoun, and their fifty-year love affair (originally recounted in The Notebook), Wilson himself is a man unable to express his true feelings. He has spent too little time at home and too much at the office, leaving the responsibility of raising their children to Jane. Now his daughter is about to marry, and his wife is thinking about leaving him. But if Wilson is sure of anything, it is this: His love for Jane has only grown over the years, and he will do everything he can to save their marriage. With the memories of Noah and Allie's inspiring life together as his guide, he vows to find a way to make his wife fall in love with him...all over again.
