The Harlan Ellison Hornbook / Harlan Ellison's Movie

      Harlan Ellison
The Harlan Ellison Hornbook / Harlan Ellison's Movie

We come now to Volume 3 of the ambitions Edgeworks program, in which White Wolf and its Borealis Legends imprint continue to release damned near every book ever written by Harlan Ellison. And this time, in yet another gigantic volume featuring two complete Ellison titles, we combine a major collection of his incomparable, troublemaking, uncompromising, confrontational essays, plus a foreword by award-winning author Robert Crais, with a rare, previously unavailable (except in a $100 very limited edition) publication of Harlan Ellison's Movie, the full-length feature film he created when a producer at 20th Century-Fox said to him, "If we gave you the money, and no interference, what sort of movie would you write?" Well, that producer is not only no longer at 20th, he left the whole entire venue of moviemaking after Harlan Ellison's Movie was seen by the Suits at the studio. There's no use even trying to describe what this film is about, except to confirm the long-standing rumor that it contains a scene in which a 70-foot-tall boll weevil chews and swallows an entire farmhouse and silo on camera. (It's Scene 33C.) What you might want to do, if you have a moment before carrying this swell book to the cash register up front, is to grab the book clerk who filed Edgeworks 3 in with the crappy Star Trek novelizations and all those dumb books with unicorns lifting their legs to pee golden on an elm tree, and say to that clerk, "You really ought to cross-file this lovely volume with Current Affairs or Pop Culture or Essays or Film of Books About Movies." Because if they've got it in a section that employs the letter "s" and "f"--well, that's just the behavior of zombies.

    Stone of Truth

      Donna J. Farris
     Stone of Truth

When the Simpson family moves to Plymouth, Teacher Trinity finds herself drawn into the center of a raging national storm. “Do the Ten Commandments have a place in public education? Do they represent absolute truth or are they merely the delusions of religious fanatics?” Sinister forces rage as Miss Trin is forced to not only defend absolute truth, but must try and save her job in the process.“But Edith never allowed Gary to have the final word in any argument. She yanked the blankets up over her shoulders and turned on her side away from her husband mumbling, 'Christians! What idiots! Anyone who actually believes some imaginary god tells them how to live has no business teaching future generations of this country. The sooner this myth is expelled from public education, the better. And I’ll work to make that happen whether you like it or not, Gary Simpson! And good night yourself!'"*************Trinity Woodard had taught fifth graders for years in her home town of Plymouth, Wisconsin. The hallmark of her success rested upon her Christian faith and a conviction that God had made every child precious. She believed God had gifted each one with unique skills to accomplish His loving plan for their lives. She was proud to be numbered among a dwindling group of public education instructors who still believed that only by following God’s ways could a child find real joy and fulfillment in life. But when atheist Gary Simpson, a high-powered attorney, and Edith his wife, an ambitious newspaper reporter, move to town and enroll their son, Derrick, into Ms. Woodward’s class, Trin’s life is turned upside down. As sinister forces wage war against the display of the Ten Commandments in her classroom and challenge its claim to represent absolute moral truth, Trinity is drawn into the center of a raging national battle. Facing powerful human conspiracies, invisible demonic plots, visible angelic interventions and divine decrees, Miss Trin must not only fight to save her job, but finds herself called upon to publicly defend ultimate truth itself. Like all stories found in the Divine Commissions series, Stone of Truth draws back the thin veil separating the physical world from this eternal, spiritual realm allowing readers a glimpse into the world of angels and demons. Readers will discover God’s heart of love for rebellious man and see His redemptive plan in motion. They will gain insight into both the power and limits of the Devil and his demons. Readers will also come to understand how to stand against such forces of evil and how holy messengers of light intervene to assist according to the will of God Almighty.Christian parents will appreciate the redemptive messages woven throughout each of the Divine Commission adventures, as themes challenge young readers to personally apply biblical truths to their own, every-day moral dilemmas. And by joining the online community of readers on the Divine Commissions blog, readers have a chance to share their evangelistic insights with other online readers, thereby reaching others with the good news of God’s love and plan for all people. Stone of Truth is Volume II in the Christian fantasy series, Divine Commissions, chronicling the heavenly adventures of Eli and Jasmine, Servants of the Most High God.

I could have just written a story about primitive cave people but I wanted the option of a cannon or a submachine gun being introduced. I wanted to try a story without zombies as the primary threat. Life without the conveniences we have come to accept as necessary to everyday life would be threatening enough. Fighting competing survivors as well as nature without falling back into a feudal system would be near impossible. As a survivalist I guess I feel copper jacketed lead is a better investment than gold.
