     Widdershins

When Roland's daughter and his wife Berdine disappear into thin air right in front of his eyes in his own back yard he is shocked. When his eccentric old neighbor comes around and tells him his family has been taken to Elfland he is skeptical at first, but he will go there if he must and face the Goblin King to get his family back. (This story is a modern retelling of an old English folktale.)White Crest is a work of fiction that is in essence, a love story that involves many twists and turns. Mackenzie Mason is a single, stressed-out, professional woman in desperate need of some time off. She finally takes the long needed break and while on that vacation, makes a new friend, deals with a stalker and works a jigsaw puzzle with extraordinary properties that changes her life forever. She also finds a way to light the dark loneliness of her life. It is difficult to nail down an exact genre, because of the several literary tactics employed. As stated, it is ultimately a love story devoid of explicit sexual content, that involves intrigue, suspense, danger and a bit of supernatural assistance. To quote Betsy Palmer, (retired celebrity), "It was an exceptionally descriptive book that once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I was done."

"I trust you are well?"The words came to Kenneth as though they traveled a long way to reach him. He put a hand to his forehead, already despising the headache that he felt growing there."What?" was all Kenneth could utter. The back of his eyes felt like they were being punctured by shards of glass and he blinked his eyes in rapid succession, trying to will away the pain."I am your introductory guide to the 73rd century. My designation is Unquill Hester. Please be at ease. You were chosen out of an infinite number of lives in the time stream because you are special." The man, larger than any man Kenneth could remember seeing, looked delighted. He couldn't stop grinning.A light danced in the man's eyes. He looked to Kenneth like a scientist who'd just discovered a particularly fascinating insect in its natural habitat."Say what?" Kenneth violently rubbed at his face with both hands. The man bowed before Kenneth. His hair flopped over the front of his head in a way that Kenneth could not help but find comical."Ahh, yes, do forgive me. It always slips my mind that time transport subjects often experience a certain amount of—shall we say, disorientation—upon entering another point in time. Please don't be alarmed. It is not my intention to cause you distress. You have been chosen, you and one other. The other remains asleep at present. Shall I wake her for you?""The—the other. You mean Savannah?"Kenneth didn't think he liked the idea of being alone in the future with a girl who had just got done insulting him only a few hours before. He started thinking of all the things he would say to her. Many of them he would not repeat to his parents."Is that her designation? A geographical area that is neither plains nor forest, yet a mixture of both. This land type vanished completely from record around the 30th century when—""Let her sleep," Kenneth said.      In The Beginning

The world is young, and a single man struggles to cross a desert wasteland. He has no other option, since he’s been exiled from his homeland. His father once told him that dangerous people lived in a fair, green land across the desert. He hopes his strength, cunning and the mark he carries upon his head are enough to keep him alive. And perhaps his dreams of ruling will no longer just be dreams...The world is young, and a single man struggles across a desert wasteland. He’s been walking almost fifty days, and his food and water are gone. But he sees mountains in the distant east, and if he can hold on long enough to get there, he just might make it out of this alive. He has no options; he’s been exiled from his land and now he’s a wanderer, so there’s no going home. He’s never seen anyone outside of his family, but his father once told him that other people lived in a fair, green land across the desert. His father had said they were dangerous, but only to each other; not to a member of his family. He would have to hope that his father was right, and his cunning and the mark he carried upon his head were enough to keep him alive.Somehow he is able to make it through the desert, and he stumbles upon the Others almost immediately. His father was right; he has nothing to fear from them. His parents had always called their family the firstborn, the children of God, and he immediately realizes that this is another race, a race that cannot compare to his in strength or intelligence. They are small and weak, clothed in filthy skins and speaking a barely intelligible language. While he feels nothing but disdain for them, he immediately realizes his dreams of ruling are no longer just dreams. As time passes he is able to bring all the tribes under his rule as he teaches them his language and ways, and imparts the knowledge and inventions that had allowed his family to thrive. Over the course of time his contempt fades as he comes to realize that though they are not his match in size, strength, or longevity of life, they still possess a spirit, intelligence and soul equal to his. Through the guidance of a wise woman, one he is proud to join with as his wife, after years of condescension his heart is opened and he can see that the others are his equal in the eyes of God. In spite of the fact that he was prideful and arrogant, the kingdom he has built with a heart focused only on his own selfish needs is still a good one. There are many challenges, both internally and externally, to his new-found wisdom, but if he can stay true to his ideals, he, his wife and their children just might be able to make a real difference in this young world.
