     Proceed to Section Z

“Proceed to Section Z” is a short story written in a choose-your-own-adventure format. Simultaneously slapstick, literary, and charmingly post-apocalyptic, the story started as a fun thought experiment and wound up inspiring the novel THE MOSTLY WEIRD CHRONICLES OF STEFFAN McFESSEL, also by Ted Wenskus and Marcos Donnelly. Like the free story? Then you'll love the SMASHWORDS novel.By Ted Wenskus and Marcos Donnelly.“Proceed to Section Z” is a parody of the old choose-your-own-adventure format popular in paper books of decades past. This short story, the post-apocalyptic adventures of reluctant hero Steffan McFessel, started as a fun thought experiment and wound up inspiring the novel THE MOSTLY WEIRD CHRONICLES OF STEFFAN McFESSEL, also by Ted Wenskus and Marcos Donnelly. Both literary and slapstick, the work offers two ways to enjoy the plot: (1) by selecting what characters do next at the end of each mini-section and making a one-click jump to the next scene; or (2) by reading straight through all optional scenes to see how the authors mix up the fun and put their characters through their paces. If you enjoy this work, be sure to get your own copy of the full novel (with similar characters but a completely different madcap plot) at Smashwords!

From the Challenging Destiny review by James Schellenberg.Schellenberg says of the stories in this collection, using Claude as an example: "I liked these stories a great deal. In particular, Wolf does a good job with endings. Since we get a lot of detail about the internal life of the characters, the structure that leads to the ending is most often an epiphany, a moment where all those internal musings or developments come together in a rush, like a plateau before the next ascent begins. Not an “I feel ripped off” artsy ending, but an artsy ending that the story is nicely tailored for." https://www.challengingdestiny.com/reviews/findingcreatures.htm(A short story selection from the collection Finding Creatures & Other Stories by C.     Hearts in Atlantis

      Stephen King
     Hearts in Atlantis

Five interconnected, sequential narratives, set in the years from 1960 to 1999. Each story is deeply rooted in the sixties, and each is haunted by the Vietnam War. Stephen King, whose first novel, Carrie, was published in 1974, the year before the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam, is the first hugely popular writer of the TV generation. Images from that war -- and the protests against it -- had flooded America's living rooms for a decade. Hearts in Atlantis, King's newest fiction, is composed of five interconnected, sequential narratives, set in the years from 1960 to 1999. Each story is deeply rooted in the sixties, and each is haunted by the Vietnam War. In Part One, "Low Men in Yellow Coats," eleven-year-old Bobby Garfield discovers a world of predatory malice in his own neighborhood. He also discovers that adults are sometimes not rescuers but at the heart of the terror. In the title story, a bunch of college kids get hooked on a card game, discover the possibility of protest...and confront their own collective heart of darkness, where laughter may be no more than the thinly disguised cry of the beast. In "Blind Willie" and "Why We're in Vietnam," two men who grew up with Bobby in suburban Connecticut try to fill the emptiness of the post-Vietnam era in an America which sometimes seems as hollow -- and as haunted -- as their own lives. And in "Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling," this remarkable book's denouement, Bobby returns to his hometown where one final secret, the hope of redemption, and his heart's desire may await him. Full of danger, full of suspense, most of all full of heart, Stephen King's new book will take some readers to a place they have never been...and others to a place they have never been able to completely leave.

The Summer Book

 TOVE JANSSON

WITH A FOREWORD BY ESTHER FREUD An elderly artist and her six-year-old grand-daughter while away a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. As the two learn to adjust to each other's fears, whims and yearnings, a fierce yet understated love emerges - one that encompasses not only the summer inhabitants but the very island itself.

Written in a clear, unsentimental style, full of brusque humour, and wisdom, The Summer Book is a profoundly life-affirming story. Tove Jansson captured much of her own life and spirit in the book, which was her favourite of her adult novels. This new edition, with a Foreword by Esther Freud, sees the return of a European literary gem - fresh, authentic and deeply humane. New and beautifully presented edition of a Scandinavian literary classic by Finland's most translated author should appeal to all ages dissolving boundaries between fiction, biography and travel.
