     A Dance With Darkness

With scorching romance and fantastic action, this original novella is a prequel to Courtney Allison Moulton's gripping and epic Angelfire series. There were shadows in this alley that no light touched, and where there was no light, anything could hide. At the end of the fourteenth century, angelic reapers struggle to defend London against a legion of the demonic who have their sights set on claiming human souls and ancient relics for a dark purpose. Madeleine, a young but powerful warrior, is duty-bound to fight the demonic, and she lives for this pursuit above all else. Then, on a routine night of tracking, she is ambushed by a cadre of reapers and, though she defeats them all, she is left wounded and at the mercy of their lord, the notorious Bastian. Madeleine is astonished when Bastian lets her live. She goes deeper into the world of the demonic and is shocked to meet him again—this powerful reaper whose touch makes her restless and gives her a thrill unlike anything else. When they fall into a dangerous clandestine affair, her head and her heart must wage their war: can their love overcome his demonic nature?     Weird Tales, Vol. II (of 2)

      E. T. A. Hoffmann
Weird Tales, Vol. II (of 2)

Notwithstanding the popularity which several of Hoffmann's tales have obtained in many different countries, we are not aware of any complete or accurate translation of his works. In England they have become known in a very partial form, chiefly by the appearance of a few isolated tales in association with those of other writers, as in the 'Specimens of German Romance,' or in Gillies' 'German Stories,' which were published about 1830. Others are familiar only through the medium of a translation from a previous French version, as is the case with the well-known 'Nutcracker,'--and in this process of double dilution the Author's name has sometimes disappeared altogether. The most important attempt to present this writer to English readers is the recent publication of two volumes entitled 'Hoffmann's Weird Stories,' which contain eleven tales seven being from the Serapions-Brüder, two from the Nachtstücke, and two from other parts of his works. These stories are all separated from the setting in which, as in the present volume, they for the most part appeared, and the translator has not aimed at any completeness or method in their selection. The first attempt to give English readers a satisfactory idea of Hoffmann's work in its completeness is inaugurated by the present volume, which will be followed by the remaining portion of the Serapion Brethren, and in due course it is hoped by other portions of his works. Musicians will be interested by the fulness with which the Author's views on musical subjects so much in advance of his age, and so just and accurate are developed in many places, such as the dialogue called "The Poet and the Composer," and the conversation which precedes the tale "Master Martin." It would be of much interest could any of Hoffmann's numerous musical compositions be brought to light at the present day; they appear to have been considerably in advance of their period, although Weber's critique on one of Hoffmann's operas is full of high praise. A. E. Taunton, September, 1886.

The small city of Tulle-sur-Mer. Winding city streets. The Blue Sparrow Inn. A secret passage. An agent of the Queen. A man in disguise. Long forgotten catacombs. Dusty bones. Large rats. Hidden agendas. Thieves. Murder. Revenge. What do those all have in common? A Whisper in the Dark. The small city of Tulle-sur-Mer. Winding city streets. The Blue Sparrow Inn. A secret passage. An agent of the Queen. A man in disguise. Long forgotten catacombs. Dusty bones. Large rats. Hidden agendas. Thieves. Murder. Revenge. What do those all have in common? A Whisper in the Dark.Stopping for the night after a weary day of travel should have been a trivial thing. For Navarr Doucette, an agent of the Queen on a secret assignment, he soon finds that it's quite the contrary when staying at the Blue Sparrow Inn. What should have been a quiet night of sleep before returning to the road in the morning soon turns into a frantic night of mystery and survival.A Whisper in the Dark is a thrilling tale of chilling suspense, dark mystery, and sinister intrigue.FROM THE AUTHOR:I became a fan of Alexander Dumas and his tales of the musketeers in my late teens. At that time I was also heavily into fantasy and supernatural tales, much like you would read in stories by Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, and R.A. Salvatore. From those five various authors and their influences I created the protagonist Navarr Doucette, as seen in A WHISPER IN THE DARK. I started writing stories about Navarr in various lengths from shorts to full novels back in 1994. Since then the world around him has been heavily fleshed out, and is very similar to Europe in the 1600s. In my stories many of the superstitions that people had during that era are not just superstitions and false fears as we know them to be today. In Navarr's world they exist, and things can be dark, mysterious, and downright evil.

    Hard to Be a God

      Arkady Strugatsky
     Hard to Be a God

The novel follows Anton, an undercover operative from the future planet Earth, in his mission on an alien planet, that is populated by human beings, whose society has not advanced beyond the Middle Ages. The novel's core idea is that human progress throughout the centuries is often cruel and bloody, and that religion and blind faith can be an effective tool of oppression, working to destroy the emerging scientific disciplines and enlightenment. Don Rumata has been sent from Earth to the medieval kingdom of Arkanar with instructions to observe and to save what he can. Masquerading as an arrogant nobleman, a dueler, and a brawler, he is never defeated, but yet he can never kill. With his doubt and compassion, and his deep love for a local girl named Kira, Rumata wants to save the kingdom from the machinations of Don Reba, the first minister to the king. But given his orders, what role can he play? This long overdue translation will reintroduce one of the most profound Soviet-era novels to an eager audience. Arkady and Boris Strugatsky are widely known as the greatest Russian writers of science fiction, and their 1964 novel Hard to Be a God is considered one of the greatest of their works. Yet until now the only English version (unavailable for over thirty years) was based on a German translation, and was full of errors, infelicities, and misunderstandings. Now, in a new translation by Olena Bormashenko, whose translation of the authors’ Roadside Picnic has received widespread acclaim, here is the definitive edition of this brilliant work.
