“Go down and scrape up the carcass,” said Nate. “Bring it back to me so we can fin-”

Nate cut himself off in mid-sentence. He was watching Luke fall, but just as he was about to witness the satisfying splat, he vanished. No splat. No bloody mess on the sidewalk. No satisfaction.

      Chapter 26

He woke up screaming, kicking his legs and swinging his arms. It felt like he was falling. Quickly realizing that he was safe in bed, he calmed down, reached over to the lamp, and turned it on.

“Oh, thank God! I’m home,” he exclaimed. “What the hell was that? A dream?”

In all the years since he had begun having the blackouts, never had one seemed so real. Never had he been able to remember a dream so vividly. He just sat in bed, staring at the wall. It all seemed so real.

He looked out the window and saw that the sun was finally coming up. It was dawn. He decided to go for a nice run. The cool, crisp, morning air would do him well. He ate a quick meal, got dressed, and headed out.

An hour later, he came home feeling refreshed. He picked up the newspaper from his doorstep and went in for a shower and breakfast. The entire time he was in the shower, all he could think about was that dream. He decided that after his shower, he would Google some names he remembered from the dream. He quickly finished showering, got dressed, and headed back to the kitchen.

He sat down at the table. As he unfolded the newspaper, his jaw nearly hit the table.

The headline read, “Four found dead, appear linked, authorities baffled.”

He continued to read. Apparently police had found four people dead the previous morning, each one of them decapitated. The heads were unaccounted for. An autopsy had not yet been performed to test for the presence of drugs or other chemicals that could further link the deaths. Authorities were not ruling out a serial killer. Two of the victims were related and found in the same house. The other two victims were strangers with no apparent connections, found separately in neighboring areas.

The identities of the four had not yet been released, but rumors said that one of the men was local millionaire Jonathan Koenig. Calls to his office for comment were not returned.

“Holy crap,” said Luke. “Was that real?”

He sat bewildered for a few minutes, just staring at the article, reading it over again. Eventually his alarm rang, which meant it was time to leave for work. He headed out to this car, started it up, and put it in reverse. He looked in his rearview mirror to see if anything was behind him as he was backing up. There in the mirror was the hooded figure from his dream, just smiling at him.
