The Sister

      R.J. Ellory
$value['title']

The first novella in the electrifying e-book-exclusive trilogy by R.J. Ellory, “the perfect author to read late into the night” (Clive Cussler)In Three Days in Chicagoland, his most ambitious effort yet, R.J. Ellory tackles the story of a brutal murder from three radically different perspectives. It’s 1956, and though Chicago’s gangland days are long over, it remains a city drenched in violence. Its latest victim is Carole Shaw, a young woman who had no enemies—except, that is, The Killer who strangled her to death and left her body on her kitchen’s cold, linoleum floor. The Sister is the story of Carole’s short life and tragic death—and of the dramatic trial that followed. Our narrator Maryanne Shaw, Carole’s grieving sister, counts down the seconds until the execution of Lewis Woodroffe, the man convicted of murdering Carole. Gripping all the way through its shocking final lines, The Sister is a bold and hard-boiled introduction to this remarkable mini-epic.

    Bubba and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers

      Joe R. Lansdale
$value['title']

Before Bubba Ho-Tep, there was Bubba and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers.Part of a secret government organization designed to protect civilians, Elvis Presley and a handful of hardcore warriors set out to save the world from an invasion of hive-minded, shape-shifting vampire-like creatures from a dark dimension who have taken up residence in a New Orleans junkyard.  Besides Elvis, among these righteous warriors is a hammer-wielding descendent of John Henry of railroad fame, a Blind Man who sees more than those with sight, Jack, a strategic wizard, and Elvis’s right hand man and journal writer, Johnny, all thrown in with Raven (real name Jenny) a female recruit who is also a budding pop star, and like Elvis, high on the charisma chart.    Their leader is none other than Colonel Parker, Elvis’s cutthroat manager, and a warrior himself, directly in contact with President Nixon, or possibly one of his doubles. It’s an unnerving peek into a secret world, and a possible delusion. It’s what happened before Elvis, aka Sebastian Haff, found himself in an East Texas rest home, mounted on a walker, fighting an Egyptian mummy and worrying about a growth on his pecker.Strange monsters, wild fights, sex with a beautiful ghost, a drug-induced trip into another dimension, and all manner of mayhem ensue, along with a Mississippi riverboat ride on a giant paddle wheel, and of course, there will be 3D glasses, fried peanut butter and ’nanna sandwiches, and a few hard working zombies.Bring the kids, but plug their ears and blindfold them. This is one wild and nasty ride to the dark side, but with laughter.

This Body of Death: An Inspector Lynley Novel

      Elizabeth George
$value['title']

From Publishers WeeklyStarred Review. Bestseller George's richly rewarding 16th novel to feature Det. Insp. Thomas Lynley (after Careless in Red) offers an intricate plot that will satisfy even jaded fans of psychological suspense. Aggressively career-minded Isabelle Ardery, the new acting superintendent of London's Metropolitan Police, boldly manages to lure Lynley, who's been grieving over his wife's murder, back from Cornwall to look into a murder case. The body of Jemima Hastings, a young woman recently relocated from Hampshire, has turned up in a London cemetery. With suspects in both locales and numerous leads to follow and interviews to conduct, Ardery succeeds in raising the hackles of Det. Sgt. Barbara Havers, Det. Insp. John Stewart, and other members of the investigating team. George tantalizes with glimpses of a horrific earlier murder case; showcases Lynley at his shrewdest, most diplomatic best; and confounds readers with a complex array of evidence, motives, and possible solutions. 6-city author tour. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From BooklistRarely can a conventional mystery sustain itself over nearly 650 pages. Some P. D. James novels have been almost that long and have succeeded in maintaining suspense and holding the reader, but this latest from George—acclaimed crime writer and winner of the Anthony Award, Agatha Award, and France’s Le Grand Prix de Littérature Policière—fails on both counts. There is a too-leisurely feel throughout, a sense that the author is luxuriating in extra space, and that’s not a good fit for suspense. Detective Inspector Lynley returns, still grieving the deaths of his wife and unborn child in Cornwall, but moving forward, assisting New Scotland Yard in an investigation involving a young woman whose body was found in a London cemetery. George intersects this plotline with a real-life case, the Bulger kidnapping, involving the harrowing kidnapping and murder of a toddler by three boys. Reimagining this case, with all the details a novelist can bring to bear, seems in bad taste at best. Except for Inspector Lynley, whose character is always intriguing, the two plots limp along, making little headway. In addition, the new love interest that George provides for Lynley seems contrived. This very bloated effort will interest only George’s longtime fans. --Connie Fletcher

    Everything She Didn't Say

      Jane Kirkpatrick

In 1911, Carrie Strahorn wrote a memoir entitled Fifteen Thousand Miles by Stage, which shared some of the most exciting events of 25 years of traveling and shaping the American West with her husband, Robert Strahorn, a railroad promoter, investor, and writer. Certain that her husband will not read it, and in fact that it will only be found after her death, Carrie is finally willing to explore the lessons she learned along the way, including the danger a woman faces of losing herself within a relationship with a strong-willed man and the courage it takes to accept her own God-given worth apart from him. Carrie discovers that wealth doesn't insulate a soul from pain and disappointment, family is essential, pioneering is a challenge, and western landscapes are both demanding and nourishing.     Triumff: Her Majesty's Hero

      Dan Abnett
$value['title']

From Publishers WeeklyBritish author Abnett, best known for his graphic novel collections and Warhammer 40,000 novel series, offers a ribald, rollicking adventure in the tradition of Flashman. Queen Elizabeth XXX is the monarch in an alternative history of Great Britain where Queen Elizabeth I married her brother-in-law, Philip II of Spain, resulting in a union that created world domination; since then all female monarchs have been named after her. Sir Rupert Triumff, the swashbuckling hero-or crude anti-hero-and one-time explorer, must ingratiate himself with the Queen in order to get permission for future voyages, and is commandeered to protect Her Majesty. The concept is clever and creative, and magic, treason, and Spanish grandees make for an entertaining read, yet the pacing-either bewilderingly fast or inert thanks to arch description-may throw readers off. But fans of more intellectual fantasy will enjoy Abnett's misadventures and hope for future installments. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Review"The concept is clever and creative, and magic, treason, and Spanish grandees make for an entertaining read" - Publishers Weekly "_Triumff: Her Majesty's Hero_ is a witch's brew of alternate history, hocus pocus, cracking action and cheesy gags. Reads like Blackadder crossed with Neal Stephenson. It's a Kind of Magick - don't miss it." - Stephen Baxter "This is what it would look like if William Shakespeare and Rowan Atkinson got together to write a novel after a night on the town with Terry Pratchett... a delightful, often original and hugely entertaining read." - Unbound "[The] action scenes are plentiful and genuinely exciting in a way that adds a new dimension." 4 Stars, Must Read Now! - _SciFi Now Magazine _"Endlessly inventive, joyously irreverent, drenched with adrenalin and wicked humour, Dan Abnett's Triumff is a brilliant occult-comedy-historical-adventure that's true to the best traditions of the genres it so eagerly devours." - Mike Carey "_Triumff_ is a swashbuckling, madcap adventure that reads like a twisted 18th century adventure novel smashed together with something from a 40s pulp magazine... If you’re a Terry Pratchett fan, loved Good Omens, and typically enjoy your fantasy with a tongue quite firmly implanted in cheek then I think this novel might be worth a look." - King of the Nerds blog Praise for Dan Abnett: "He makes war so real that you want to duck." - _SciFi.com _"Abnett truly is the master of future war." - SciFi.com "Dan has imbued the art of waging war... with a vivid and brutal energy, infusing the action with a palpable sense of tension" - My Favourite Books reviewing (_Titanicus)_ "...a highly cinematic read, in which Abnett delivers a convincing, intricately constructed future, filled with interesting characters, and the promise of much more to come. " - SF Site (reviewing Ravenor) "Dan Abnett does not disappoint with his story telling skills. Not only does he write some believable characters, but he can get a battle pictured in your mind with astonishing ease." - Walker of Worlds (reviewing Titanicus)

    Suspicious River

      Laura Kasischke
$value['title']

"The first time I had sex with a man for money, it was September —still like summer, but the heat in the motel room was on and it seemed to coat my throat with dust. The man was dull, small-eyed, no taller than myself, but he seemed afraid. He wouldn't look at me. When I asked him what he wanted me to do, he said, 'That's your job.'" So begins the poet Laura Kasischke's mesmerizing and unforgettable first novel. Leila Murray is the novel's narrator - young, married, living in a small town, and working in a motel as a receptionist, then as a prostitute. Leila slowly discloses the details of her childhood, her mother's murder, and the numb promiscuity of her adolescence, while contemporary events unfold and lead her to the dark turn her life will take one October weekend when she meets a man named Gary Jensen.
