      David Malouf

A collection of personal essays and writing from David Malouf to celebrate his 80th birthday. Topography, geography, history. Multiculturalism, referendums, the constitution and national occasions. Being Australian and Australia's relationship to the world. Putting ourselves on the map. All these subjects, and more, are explored from the generous, questioning and original perspective of David Malouf. At the heart of these pieces is the idea of home, where and what it is. An undersized daredevil, prone to jumping off roofs into trees and off bridges into lakes, Adam was a kid who broke his own bones but would never break a promise to his parents. But after high school, Adam fell in with the...

    Ehrengraf for the Defense

      Lawrence Block
$value['title']

You've never met a lawyer like Martin Ehrengraf. He never loses a case, and rarely sees the inside of a courtroom. Nor does he pass his hours poring over dusty legal volumes, or searching the Lexis database. Ehrengraf is a criminal lawyer who takes cases on a contingency basis; he collects a fee only when his client goes free. And that somehow never fails to happen happens, because his clients always turn out to be innocent. Ehrengraf's debut came in 1978, in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. Ten stories appeared between then and 2003, and now, after almost a decade, the dapper little lawyer is back (only in eBook form, and only for Kindle) in "The Ehrengraf Settlement." All eleven Ehrengraf stories, exclusively eVailable as Kindle Select titles, have now been gathered up into this full-length eBook. In 1994, when there were only eight stories about the fellow, a small press collected them in a limited edition of Ehrengraf for the Defense. (That little volume commands $250 to $1250 on the collector market—if you can find it.) Edward D. Hoch, acknowledged master of short mystery fiction, wrote an appreciative introduction, and Lawrence Block added an afterword. Hoch's introduction is reprinted in our new enlarged eDition of the stories, and Block has updated his afterword. Lawrence Block has peopled his fictional universe with a host of memorable characters. If you want a walk through the dark and gritty streets of Manhattan and the outer boroughs, Matt Scudder's your man. If you need a lighthearted and lightfingered companion to lift something from a safe in a triple-locked apartment, you want Bernie Rhodenbarr. If you have to get someone out of your hair once and for all, you'd better get Keller on the case. But if you're facing a murder charge, and if the evidence is overwhelming, you want the one man who's not only prepared to believe in your innocence but able to demonstrate it to the world. You want Ehrengraf. Just make sure you pay his fee...

The Devil-Tree of El Dorado: A Novel

      Frank Aubrey
$value['title']

This volume is from 1897; no illustrations are included in this Kindle version. There is a long tradition among the romances of the 19th and early 20th century of the "lost race" novel concerning explorers (usually British or American) who stumble onto a culture exists hidden from the outside world. Among the most famous "lost race" novels are H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines (1885), She (1886), and Allan Quatermain (1887). Jules Verne got into the act with Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), as did Arthur Conan Doyle (most famous as the creator of Sherlock Holmes) with The Lost World (1912) and its sequel, The Poison Belt (1913). Edgar Rice Burroughs was among the most prolific lost race authors through his Tarzan series. There have been literally hundreds more, many of them famous. The Devil-Tree of El Dorado (1897) concerns the discovery of the legendary city of Manoa in British Guiana, high atop Mt. Roraima, at that date an incredibly remote part of the world. British Guiana achieved independence in 1966 and became simply Guyana. In 1970 it became the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America, and its neighbours are Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname (formerly Dutch Guiana). With avid explorers and adventurers pushing to the remotest corners of the world, it was becoming harder to find isolated plateaus and secret valleys. South America and Africa held the last hopes for such romantic notions. Another aspect of the lost race novel is its fantastic content. Many of the writers pioneering the genre liberally mixed in dashes of science, science fiction, and fantasy-in Aubrey's case, it takes the form of a scientific expedition to Mt. Roraima. Once beyond the reaches of civilization and hence the rational world, the fantasy and horror begin to creep into the narrative. The devil-tree of the title is nothing less than a carnivorous, man-eating tree on the summit of the mountain!* .....*summary from Fantastic Fiction

    The Garden of the Plynck

      Karle Wilson Baker
$value['title']

Chapter I The Dimplesmithy Grown people have such an exasperating way of saying, "Now, when I was a little girl—" Then, just as you prick up the little white ears of your mind for a story, they finish, loftily, "I did—or didn't do—so-and-so." It is certainly an underhand way of suggesting that you stop doing something pleasant, or begin doing something unpleasant; and you would not have thought that Sara's dear mother would have had so unworthy a habit. But a stern regard for the truth compels me to admit that she had. You see, Sara's dear mother was, indeed, most dear; but very self-willed and contrary. Her great fault was that she was always busy at something. She would darn, and she would write, and she would read dark-colored books without pictures. When Sara compared her with other mothers of her acquaintance, or when this very contrary own-mother went away for a day, she seemed indeed to Sara quite desperately perfect. But on ordinary days Sara was darkly aware, in the clearest part of her mind—the upper right-hand corner near the window—that her mother, with all her charm, really did need to be remoulded nearer to her heart's desire. She was especially clear about this on the frequent occasions when she would come into the room where her mother was sitting, and plump down upon a chair with a heart-rending sigh, and say, "I wish I had somebody to play with!" For then her dear but most contrary mother would glance up from her book or her darning and remark, with a calm smile, "When I was a little girl—" "Ah!" "I used to go inside my head and play." And Sara would answer with a poor, vindictive satisfaction, "There's nothing in my head to play with!" And her kind-hearted mother would snip off her thread and say gently, in a tone of polite regret, "Poor little girl!" Then Sara would gnash the little milk-teeth of her mind and have awful thoughts. The worst she ever had came one day when Mother, who had already filled about fourteen pages of paper with nothing in the world but words, acted that way again. And just as she said, "Poor little girl!" Sara thought, "I'd like to take that sharp green pencil and stick it into Mother's forehead, and watch a story run out of her head through the hole!" But that was such an awful thought that she sent it scurrying away, as fast as she could. Just the same, she said to herself, if Mother ever acted that way again— And, after all, Mother did. And that was the fatal time—the four-thousand-and-fourth. For, after Mother had suggested it four thousand and four times, it suddenly occurred to Sara that she might try it. So she shut the doors and went in. Yes, I said shut the doors and went in; for that is what you do when you go into your head. The doors were of ivory, draped with tinted damask curtains which were trimmed with black silk fringe. The curtains fell noiselessly behind Sara as she entered. And there in the Gugollaph-tree by the pool sat the Plynck, gazing happily at her Echo in the water. She was larger than most Plyncks; about the size of a small peacock....

Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Dare I say it? Dare I say that I, a plain, prosaic lieutenant in the republican service have done the incredible things here set out for the love of a woman - for a chimera in female shape; for a pale, vapid ghost of woman-loveliness? At times I tell myself I dare not: that you will laugh, and cast me aside as a fabricator; and then again I pick up my pen and collect the scattered pages, for I MUST write it - the pallid splendour of that thing I loved, and won, and lost is ever before me, and will not be forgotten. The tumult of the struggle into which that vision led me still throbs in my mind, the soft, lisping voices of the planet I ransacked for its sake and the roar of the destruction which followed me back from the quest drowns all other sounds in my ears! I must and will write - it relieves me; read and believe as you list. At the moment this story commences I was thinking of grilled steak and tomatoes - steak crisp and brown on both sides, and tomatoes red as a setting sun!
